Default Bel Pre Elementary

We live in the Silver Spring 20906 zipcode. Our child will be school age next year and would have to go to Bel Pre Elementary school.

Currently, he is in an excellent private pre-school but we do not want to continue to pay that amount of money for 12 years of private school. Can anyone give me information on whether Bel Pre Elementary school and the public schools in general in the 20906 area code of Montgomery County are a viable option.

If not we are considering moving to Rockville (which has better schools) or out of the Washington Area completely as the public schools, including Montgomery County have a very poor reputation. Is this poor reputation warranted?
