Is Glenn Burnie a good place to live?
My husband and I are moving to Maryland in December. I got a job in the Bowie area and have been researching apartments online. I want to live in an area that is low crime and cheap rent ranging from $800 to $1000 a month.
I would love to live in the Annapolis area, however rent is expensive. I have been looking in the Glen Burnie area. Rent seems to be less expensive there.
My question is, is Glen Burnie a good place to live since it is outside of Baltimore? Is the crime rate low? Is the commute time from Glen Burnie to Bowie bad?
Thanks for your help.

I've been visiting Glen Burnie since a child, and I have some (mostly) fond memories. However, though its definitely not the worst area, but its very far from the best. I remember it being a much nicer area when I was younger. It seems to have slowly gone downhill over the years. I would be suspicious of the more affordable areas specifically (you do get what you pay for). I'd try to visit at night before moving in if I were you. Which area are you looking at in Glen Burnie?
One thing, I definitely would not compare it to Annapolis. For example, in Glen Burnie, Dunkin Donuts is one of the most happening night-spots. The seating runs out and people end up showing up with lawn chairs to sit around. GB is very blue-collar while Annapolis is more aristocratic.
PS if you do move in, check out the Honey Bee diner, its a very good greasy-spoon kind of diner. I also recommend Anne's Footlongs.
PSS Check out www.burgersub.com, its very useful if you are unfamiliar with the area and am looking for a place to live.

Also what about Odenton, MD? And as far as the area of GB or Odenton, MD i really don't know. I'm kind blind to the whole area at this point. All suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

glen burnie
glen burnie is an ok area but like others have said it is completely blue collar. there are some nice areas in glen burnie but no apartments in that section. old towne glen burnie is very nice but it's also quite a bit more expensive. the main draw to the area for me and many others is that it's very easy to get around and GB has everything you could ever want...besides a bit of culture there's no reason to go anywhere else for things.
odenton is an ok area but you need watch out for the areas closer to ft. meade, which is a bad area. overall odenton is a nice residential area with mostly new shopping centers and housing.
ito the south i would suggest gambrills, crofton and millersville...as always remember that you get what you pay for. to the east i would suggest arnold and severna park. i've lived in this area my whole life so feel free to ask questions.
also, anne's dairy cream is overrated.

If you have kids I wouldn't put them in Glen Burnie schools. Also if renting apartment, I wouldn't do it myself.
You can also check out Pasadena, I just moved there, not too bad and you could rent a townhouse or condo. Chesapeake school district is suppose to be good. My daughter went to George Fox last year and I found I liked that school. Didn't really care for Sunset Elementary when my daughter went there and was glad to transfer my son out this year.
Glen Burnie does have more shopping there than the Pasadena area.

Have you looked in the Severna Park, Arnold area? Basically in between Glen Burnie and Annapolis. Has some of the benefits of the Annapolis area but some areas are not as pricey. Still close to Annapolis so you can enjoy the nightlife, water, etc. I grew up in Annapolis and worked in Glen Burnie for a little while...not too keen on the area, but I guess you could say I was a little spoiled by Annapolis. I would describe most of Glen Burnie as "urban sprawl," and tends to have the reputation by surrounding areas as a little "trashy," but that is also a generalization.

Not going to get anything for $1,000 in Severna Park or Arnold. They are both very high.

I grew up very close to Glen Burnie and it does have decent areas. Just be sure to check out the area before committing to it. Check out the Mountain Ridge apartments off of Hospital Drive. The commute to Bowie would be OK, but I would also check around Crofton, Gambrills, and Bowie itself.

If you're going to be working in Bowie, I think Odenten or Croften would be a nicer place to live than Glen Burnie. Closer to Bowie too.

Since you will be workng in Bowie why not rent in Bowie. BOwie is very nice. I am not sure if you will find rent for $800 dollars anywhere in Bowie but maybe 1k maybe. I think you will be very impress with Bowie.
