Hello All,

Background:
I used to work at Pax's River NAS about year ago but moved back to the Midwest. I miss living in the DC area so I want to move back. When I worked there last I lived in Lexington Park and hated it but loved the job.

If I do end up working at Pax's River NAS again I don't want to live in LP. I want to live closer to DC but don't know where to live and how bad the drive will be. What do you all suggest?

Thanks

Forgot to add...

I am a female in my mid to upper twenties. I want to live in an area that has some night life and entertainment.

I'd suggest St. Charles in Waldorf. The drive is about 32 miles, but it is against traffic. IDK if that is acceptable to you.

It's kind of tough for you because Pax River is so remote, as you know. My wife is from Waldorf and it is the closest thing to a place with nightlife. But I'm not sure it's got enough for a young woman looking for fun. And any closer to DC will make your commute a nightmare.

Why don't you go back when you are 45 and your idea of fun is growing a garden.

I don't think there is anywhere in the tri-county area that has anything resembling an "urban" nightlife. Most of the conversations around here are not "what" to do but "where" to drink.

The Leonardtown Pub and the Lounge at Bollywood are really on the upswing as far as places to hang out for young professionals but it is still nothing resembling dc nightlife.

If you are set on Pax River you are either going to have a long commute to work or a long commute to nightlife so you need to decide which is more important.

Tercel95,

I do agree with you. Last time I made the decision that I would rather have a shorter commute to work and I was not happy because there was not a lot to do especially being single in an area like that but I don't know how I feel about an hour commute one way just to go to work. I am at a cross road that is why I posted this question. I was hoping some people would reply that are or have done a long commute to Pax's and could tell me if it was worth it or not.

I am 25 and work on base so kind of in the same demographic. I just don't see a situation where it would be worth it. There is a girl on my team actually that lives in DC and works here. She has a pretty good setup though. She telecommutes 2 days a week and stays locally during the time she has to be here. She hates having to commute down here though. A position where you could telecommute part-time might be possible but it depends on what department you work for.

There are a significant number of DoD/Navy/Tech jobs in DC itself so maybe you could find something there.

You can get tons of information about resources in the Pax River area by clicking here Southern Maryland Onlineâ„¢ - Your on-line community for Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary's Counties.â„¢ And they have a forum board for questions here Life in Southern Maryland - Southern Maryland Community Forums . They get many questions from people relocating, such as you. Although I can guarantee that if you ask there about living in Waldorf, you will get many sarcastic smart-ass replies saying that Waldorf is dangerous and has high crime.
