Question Military Transfer from Texas to Maryland--Need Advice

We are transferring from Texas to Maryland... Thinking about living in Waldorf or La Plata... We have a child in the 8th grade.. How are the schools and any areas (and or zip codes) we should avoid living in? Thank you....

I live in La Plata and the schools are great. Waldorf has some nice areas, but generally not so great. I would avoid St. Charles and anything around the mall. Some older developments in Waldorf off Leonardtown Road/Route 5 such as Forest Park are nice.

I agree with LaPlata. Your best bet if it's not out of price range. Schools are better, too.

La Plata is a big draw for people because it has a more relaxed feel to it. In regards to the schools, The clients I've worked with recently that were concerned about schools were looking in the la plata area and in the North Point school district in Waldorf. For school sports I know that Westlake is Ranked #6 in the MD/DC/VA region by the Washington Post. Despite what anyone tells you on a message board, I highly recommend you come out and see the area for yourself. Your Realtor should be a good resource of information about that because what it boils down to is what neighborhoods you like the best, what school district appeals the most to you, and how close you want to be to shopping. Don't be afraid to ask a Realtor to just drive you around to different neighborhoods just so that you can get a good feel for the area!
