Hi All,

In my quest to be nearer family (who live in Durham, NC), I've set my sights on Maryland. I find NC and VA to be too socially conservative for my comfort, but I know Maryland is a bit more open-minded in general. I'm a country boy who would probably have a full time job in Annapolis, but I'd love to live on a ranch (nothing huge, since I work fulltime off the ranch). How far from Annapolis are the farm areas of the county?

Thanks to anyone who chimes in. I appreciate the guidance!

There used to be a large turf farm in Davidsonville, along the highway. I think within 20 miles of Annapolis, you would see areas where corn or tobacco is raised.

Thank you! I'm a cowboy (or cattleman depending on your preferred terminology) so I really want a cattle ranch or a goat/sheep ranch at the least! I'm doing some research, but appreciate the first hand knowledge. I gave you well deserved rep.

I search on Realtor.com for areas south of Annapolis for "farms/ranches". I saw some possibles: an 8 acre place in Lothian with a barn and pasture, a 16 acre parcel with a small house in Huntingtown, 16 acres in Brandywine with a horse barn, etc. You could also look on the Eastern Shore and still be within commuting distance of Annapolis; there's still plenty of farmland there.

Thanks again. I was on a site that caters specifically to farm and ranch real estate, but couldn't tell how far from Annapolis they were in real time (mileage depends on road conditions and traffic to equal time). I'm getting some good leads. I was especially surprised at the rural character of the Eastern Shore. Had figured it for suburban until I took a closer look.

Just about the whole of Maryland and Virginia's Eastern Shore is very similar, both politically and geographically, to Eastern North Carolina. You could drive from Morehead City right up to Dover or Salisbury and except for the Virginia Beach area, never know that you had left NC. Trailers, little towns that time forgot, railroad tracks right beside the road, farms, farms and more farms. You have some bright spots here and there, just like ENC, but generally overall, very country.

Look around in the Lothian area of Anne Arundel County. There is usually something there. And it's big time horse country too.
