Default advice on living between BAL and DC

We will be most grateful for advice regarding places to live (rent) between DC and Baltimore (jobs in both cities). Education very very important (PK, 3rd grade, 6th grade) and proximity to public transportation second. Someone told me about Laurel and Bowie but did not get such a good feeling for those from some browsing (crime, not so good schools...). any info will be welcome!

Look at areas just across the bridge from Old town Alexandria- Accokeek and Fort Washington Md-Great places for houses and kids-not so easy on being close to the metro since that is where the crime is...

Howard county has a very good school system. Columbia, Savage and Laurel are all good options. Also that are parts of Laurel that are in Montgomery county which also has a good school system. Laurel is not all bad, it just depends on where you choose to live in Laurel. Also Burtonsville could be an option.
