My family will be moving to MD this summer. My wife will be working at Ft. Meade and I will likely find a job in Baltimore doing something for a nonprofit. We are looking for a safe, affordable area for us to live (2 women and a 3 year old). It seems like Howard County has a better reputation than other counties surrounding the base, and better schools. I read "Places to Avoid in Howard County" thread. Wondering if there's any more advice? Commute times to Ft. Meade and Baltimore from different places? We prefer a rural/suburban lifestyle, but have lived in cities, too. We're hoping rent (house or townhouse) is no more than $1800. Is that do-able? Where? Any place for a lesbian family to avoid? Thanks!

I'm not in MD now but am moving back there this summer. Howard County is definitely a more liberal area, so I imagine would be a good choice for a 2 mom family. The other areas surrounding Ft. Meade have a big military presence so its going to be more conservative. Howard County would be a good area commute wise for Ft. Meade, and if you are thinking you'll be commuting into Baltimore, you might want to look into Elkridge (a town in Howard Co). It would put you in the middle of Ft. Meade and Baltimore and its priced a bit lower. Hopefully some other same sex couples will chime in bc its hard to know unless you've lived it.
