A major impetus for the original forum question(s) was that Maryland has been considered reliably "blue" for over three decades. Maryland has voted Democrat in 8 out of the past 10 presidential elections. Maryland voted Reagan in '84 and Bush I in '88; it could be argued that the least compelling Democratic candidates over the past 100 years were nominated for those elections.

This is why Carson is interesting. For many young Maryland voters, it has never been a "swing state" in Presidential Elections and drawn the attention of a Nevada, Maine, or Colorado. Since Clinton, Maryland has thought to be "in the bag" for Democrats and Republican candidates haven't had a prayer. Would Carson be compelling enough of a candidate that if he ran on the GOP tickets both parties would actually have to expend energy attempting to sway (or at least motivate) Maryland voters? For those of you who have never had the opportunity to live in a Swing State during a Presidential Election year, the political climate is radically different than the foregone conclusion attitude that has been experienced here over the past 20 years.

No he would not turn MD into a swing state. Republicans are not losing because they don't have black or other minority candidates. But I hope they keep thinking that.

MD will not be anything but solid blue for quite awhile.

Republicans always blame the messenger, never the message.

Ben Carson is an independent. I would support him if he ran as an independent.

While, I believe Ben Carson is a very intelligent and gifted man, I don't agree with many of his political views and would not vote for him. I also don't believe that the state in general would give him the majority of the vote in any political contest, despite the large minority demographic. Michael Steele (who was more of a token than a quality politician) proved that theory wrong in no uncertain terms.

I think while Maryland may have been blue for a long time, its only very recently that we have become so radically liberal and far left. Remember INDEED the gas tax has NOT been increased since 1992, and that the increases in the alcohol tax was the first seen in MANY years also. So for a long time, taxes were still much lower. And remember very importantly the tolls haven't been increased for a long time either. So this liberal tax and spend mentality is rapidly expanding.

And also keep in mind that even 5 years ago, illegal aliens didn't have in-state tuition or drivers licenses, the death penalty was on the books, gun rights were respected, taxes were lower, and gay marriage was illegal. 5 years ago there was no PlanMarylnad banning population growth on the Eastern Shore and Western Maryland, there was not this hostility to steelmaking, natural gas drilling, coal mining, agriculture, and fishing.

Ben Carson would never get elected in today's political climate. Americans today are looking for government handouts, entitlements, unemployment payments, food stamps, "free" education and medical care. Dr, Carson got where he is because he studied, worked and overcame poverty, discrimination, and learning disabilities. He has used a pioneering entreprenurial spirit to rise to his world-renouned stature. His message is one of hardwork to get ahead. Today's America is all about voting for the candidate who will give me "something for nothing", that candidate's principles be
damned.

Carson = Herman Cain with an MD.

Where does the GOP get these clowns Cain, Yukon Barbie, Bachmann, Newt, Sanctimonious Santorum, Mitts, Jindal, Marco Boobio, Ron Paul, Rand Paul, Ryan Paul, ...

What, will the line stretch out to the crack of doom?

The Republicans are the party of stupid. They will never win another presidential election unless they succeed in suppressing the vote!

It has been said at least three times already, he is not a Republican, he's a Independent.

Does anybody actually understand politics anymore without watching what the news tells them? This thread is just full of ignorance from both sides of the aisle. It amazes me how brainwashed people are in this country. This is about the dumbest thing since people who voted for O'Malley complaining that he keeps raising taxes.

He equated homosexuality to beastiality and child molestors. This is a state that approved a referendum that allowed gays to marry. So no, if he maintains these disgusting views, he won't get elected in md.
