I never wrote anything about banning guns. I actually think banning guns is stupid as you can't go from a gun culture to not having guns, and anyone with half a brain knows that criminals do not generally purchase firearms in a legal manner. If someone wants to own an AR-15 or an M-1 Gerand or a pea-shooter, that is their business. My statement was about owning something "powerful" for the sake of protection, which in my opinion is a weak argument, when a handgun and a few well-placed rounds would be sufficient.

So, I am not against certain types of guns. I just question why some people would want certain types of guns.

I can only speak for myself. I own a handgun for home defense. Much better IMO, than a bulky rifle.

That being said I really enjoy shooting the AR-15 at the range. Yes, target shooting is a hobby, it is fun, it lets off steam. Safety first always, but for many people shooting is recreation.

So, about the AR-15. You don't need to reload often. It is easy to shoot. It is easy to handle. It is accurate. For instance, my first time shooting with one was using no scope, standing, and aiming at an 8.5X11 piece of paper at 75 yards. I got 3 out of 5 rounds on the paper. Not great, but good for my newbie standards. I enjoyed it. I could easily see why people who target shoot often would want one.

I just wish MD would label itself as having 'Social Democracy' ambitions; I love that state and it's done a lot correct but it's also getting plenty of things wrong. Eventually the state will have Universal Health Care, I know legislation hasn't been proposed for UHC but I can only imagine someone wants to propose it. The state needs to reduce its corporate tax to 6.0 to compete with VA in gaining new corporations to pay for all it wants to do as well.

In regards to having the best educational system in America, that's totally debatable in my eyes. I'm from NC where we must pass extra-curicluar classes such as art with a 70, while classes such as English you need a 83 to pass. I found out in Maryland its the complete opposite, you can pass with a 59.5 which is just absurd in my eyes and this gives MD a unfair advantage over other states. Grades are often curved in MD as well making it virtually impossible to fail some courses, I'm not sure if this is completely true but I'm just going by what people have told me. If I attended school in MD my high school years, I'd probably be in Hopkins since your grading scale is so different. I think this grade system is just popping out a lot of empty heads, and is only being done to make you MD continue being at the top of US-educational system.


I'm positive O'malley would love to seize all corporate and small business taxes, and I can't help but not to like the guy for some some reason, I see him as a good person but I just believe he's too far to the left with his politics and he wouldn't mind turning MD never mind the US into a Socialist country. Trust me, I'm the furtherest thing from a conservative, I identify myself as a left-leaning Independent but I just don't approve of the direction O'Malley would like to turn MD. I know he doesn't like business, he'd rather give handouts, I've just seen so much of his policies in my face when I did live in MD. I just want him to prove to me, and all other business owners that he likes business but he just fails to, he want's MD to be full of gov't workers as opposed to small business owners and corporations. I'd love to open my first business in MD, but whenever I do open it, its going to VA because MD is far too anti-business for me, of course I haven't had the opportunity to actually deal with MD on the business side of things yet but a few business owners in the state have told me about over-regulation in the state that makes them want to move or even close their doors. I'm sorry for this rant, but O'Malley or better yet this new MD is too much.

On the plus side of things, I do like how counties such as Montgomery County have mandated that lower-income housing be put into certain developments. I think 'Healthy Howard' was a decent idea. I think raising the gasoline tax to pay for new infrastructure was also a good idea. I think allowing Casinos was a good idea. I think O'malley deciding to invest in MD schools was an excellent idea. I just don't like what MD is doing on the private sector side of things and it truly pisses me off.

MD schools for the most part are as good as they say they are. If you look at things other than grades like standardized testing scores or the National Assessment of Educational Progress you would see that MD ranks favorably against other states.

Unfortunately there is no great way to objectively compare schools across state lines but my experience with the MD public school system has been overwhelmingly positive. The sheer number of opportunities available at the average MD public school make it stand out in my opinion.
