I will be relocating to Annapolis/AA county from California this coming June with my husband and three small kids.

I have a six year old who is currently in Mandarin immersion school (it's available in the public schools out here in California), however I am struggling to find a way to continue her learning in Chinese after our move.

I have given up trying to find a good mandarin immersion school so am considering a tutor for a few hours a week. Obviously it's not the same as immersion school but it's probably better than nothing. Any recommendations on where I should start? I did call a language school near Annapolis who promoted mandarin classes on their website but they said that they tried to recruit some students nothing came of it.

Recommendations?

Have you tried the Children's Global Readiness Academy in Upper Marlboro? Or the Reid Temple Christian Academy in Glenn Dale? Links Here: My Asian Kid - DC / China

Are you set on locating in AA County? If not, could you look into locating in another area more convenient to one of the schools on the list?

Growing up in the Rockville/Montgomery county area - Chinese schools were very active. This included intramural sports and other activities among the schools. CCACC (per goldenage1's link) also has a lot of activities among the chines community in the DC area. I can only guess that it has only grown over the years (I attended Chinese school in the 80's), which supported by, again, the link above.

I also believe they have Chinese immersion classes in Montgomery county - albeit this would only be in a few schools as opposed to county wide. But it may be worthwhile to see if the same option exists in Anne Arundel.

Goldenage1 - thanks that link was useful. I'll take a look through the schools. I did google Chinese schools a few months ago and didn't find much available. That webpage is certainly more comprehensive that what I found.
Rockville and Bethesda look like the best places for Chinese options. That doesn't really help when it comes to work commuting though. I'll check out the Global Readiness Academy, since that isn't so far, and looks like it might have some after school classes.

I don't have a Chinese kid, she is as blonde and blue eyed as they come, but we lived in China when she was very small and it was her first language back then. Would hate to lose it.

Thank you.

Hi,

Did you ever find a mandarin immersion program to send your daughter? I am in the same position. We're considering a move to the area and although she's young, my daughter has been in mandarin immersion for preschool and it is my hope to continue it if at all possible.
