Hello all, I hope is well with whomever is reading this;

I visited MD today and went to a grocery store and I decided to pick up some Pringles and when I rung it up, it had no tax, so I used my debit card to pay for it. Then I had a different transaction where I rung up some Twizzlers and it ended up having a tax on it. So does Maryland have a sweets tax or something? I've noticed this before but I've always forgotten to ask.

SN: Both Transactions were at Giant.

Candy is taxed, chips are not (except in vending machines).

Wow; so are any other groceries taxed such as meat or is it just candy taxed?

There is no tax on nutritious food. Things like laundry detergent, pet food and snacks are taxed. I'm not sure why chips count as nutritious food, but maybe some lobbyist is behind that decision.

You could always move to Ohio and not be taxed on groceries at all. Heck, in Ohio you can go to any restaurant and drive-thru/take-out and not get taxed. Well, at least Maryland doesn't tax most groceries, I suppose. I need me some PRINGLES~

As of March 2013, the sales tax rate in Chicago and Cook County IL is 9.25% on most tangible goods sold inside the city and county, and 2.25% on food, drugs, and medical appliances.
What is the sales tax rate in Chicago? Illinois Sales Tax Rate
This a frickin' expensive town in which to live. They tax everything that moves, and if it doesn't move, they'll tax that too.

Oh well, at least the climate is nice.
