I believe their (MSP) training academy is located in Sykesville, about 30 minutes west of the Baltimore city line. He will be living at the academy, weekends excluded, for the length of the class (I believe about 26 weeks). I would just rent somewhere near there...gives you time to learn the state and await his assignment once he graduates the academy.

Thank you MikMal. Then it would make sense to rent in Columbia, Elkridge, Ellicott City or Clarksville as there is not much out in Sykesville.

OP- please don't look closer to the west side of Baltimore, even if it is cheaper. If you don't know where you are going, you can end up in a bad neighborhood. Stick with Howard County. For example, there is a three-month lease in Ellicott City on Craigslist at $1060, and it's renewable. There are many people who work short-term for Social Security, so the management companies are used to short-term leases. If that's too much money, you might look for a room-mate share.

I think Bethesda is great for young couple. But it is a bit pricey.

I am curious what people think about Owings Mills area? Looking there, and it seems to be nicely placed between where my husbands training will be and Baltimore City.

Also, have seen a few nice places in Catonsville.
