Hi All,

I have the opportunity to relocate to the Maryland/DC area and have been born and raised in the Chicago Suburbs. I need to be in close proximity to a major airport as I travel quite often for my job, but am looking for an area that is:

1) Renter Friendly
2) Good for singles
3) Lots of outdoor activities (hiking, biking, running, etc)
4) Developed community
5) Low crime (safety is a big hot button for me as I will be living alone)

I appreciate any suggestions on locations, neighborhoods, etc! Thank you!

Where is your job located? The general rule of thumb is to live as close to work as you can afford.

I'd be working from home and traveling throughout the Mid-Atlantic so airport proximity is then only important factor in regards to location.

The best airport is the Baltimore-Washington airport, BWI. However, your requirements have some contradictions. Most of the nice suburban areas around the airport are very family-oriented. Columbia, Ellicott City, and the rest of Howard County are good examples. There may be pockets of buildings with singles, but they are mostly family housing. Odenton is another growing, very safe area, but I think mostly families. Crofton is another possible in this category.

On the other hand, singles are gathering in the hipper areas in South Baltimore. (See reports on Federal Hill and Patterson Park.) Safety may be an issue for you in Baltimore however, and there is little access to hiking or biking unless you drive outside the city. I think your best opportunities for meeting interesting, professional singles would be in Baltimore, and I'd suggest joining a gym.

However if you really want to be in the suburbs, here's the situation. In Odenton, many singles will work for the federal National Security Agency, and they can't talk about their work. I'm not sure how interesting they would be. In Columbia or the other suburbs, I'd suggest joining a gym and finding a hiking or biking club.

What can you tell us that would help with a recommendation? For example, do you have the budget for a luxury apartment? If so, Harbor East in Baltimore would be good. Odenton had also built several new luxury complexes expecting the base re-alignment influx.

Baltimore is more hassle-free but Dulles will have the most options. Depending on where you're flying, one might be way more convenient than the other. National is the most expensive and most centrally located, but honestly I don't know anyone who travels for business out of DCA.

Here's a few more questions to answer:

1) Are there cities you will be flying to predominantly?
2) Does your company have a strict must-take-the-cheapest fare policy?
3) Do you have a car?
4) What's your monthly budget for rent?

My budget caps at $1800 for rent and I will have a vehicle (parking is a concern). My company does not have a take the cheapest fare policy but of course, consideration of the expense is expected. I will be traveling for work in NJ/DC/Philly via car mostly but will need access to the airport but not more than 2-4 times per month maximum.

I'm really looking for that pedestrian life style outside of work hours, having the ability to walk to pubs/shops/grocer, etc.

Thanks for the input thus far!

You might look at downtown Silver Spring.

Pros:

Walkable
Within your budget
Easy-ish access to BWI, DCA, IAD and Union Station (take the Acela to NY, it's so worth it)
Finding reasonably priced parking shouldn't be an issue

Cons:

Not the lowest crime in the DC area
No real outdoors activities, but that's true everywhere here
