Possible Relocation to MD (Crownsville/New Carrollton) (Annapolis: rentals, house)

Looking at a possible relocation to MD. Have not accepted yet as we need to do some research. Job is located in Crownsville but possibility it may move to New Carrollton at some point. Priority is schools of course but second we need a more rural environment. I have a miniature horse I will need to house in the backyard plus a few chickens. Mini horse takes up no more room then a big dog but we need an environment where he is legal to have at home Thanks!

I suggest living in Anne Arundel County, but not anywhere with an HOA. Here's a link to the animal control laws. I suspect it is OK to keep a horse and chickens, but not sure: Summary of Animal Laws

Here's a statement on horses. Zoning FAQs I know miniature horses are not ponies, but they require 10,000 square feet for a pony. If they job moves to New Carrollton, I think you should plan on commuting. Prince George County will not be a friendlier place for your animals, and the schools are not very good. .

Zoning thank you! Had not even thought of that yet. Its been a few years since we have had to consider it. So what areas should we look in? What is the Davidsonville area like for schools?

I'd look anywhere you can find a one-acre property. Further south in Anne Arundel is more rural. The north part of Calvert County is also possible, and there are some highly rated schools.

Regarding schools, I would only look in Greatschools.org . Davidsonville has a 9 rated elementary school. I'll leave it for others to comment on middle or high schools. However, I'd check the housing prices before you commit to anything: you may have sticker shock.

The Central Middle School is rated a 10, and South River High School is rated a 9 according to Greatschools.

However, the typical house with one acre or more is priced at $400-500,000 to buy. There is one fixer-upper at $245,000. I am not sure that rentals are available which allow horses and chickens.
