I'm getting out as soon as its feasible. Probably not for at least 9 months or a year, but I really don't know for sure. Lived my whole life in MD, then went west for 4 years for college. Moved back here after that for a job.....what huge mistake!! Making $50k around here is similar to making 25 or 30 other places, except that the quality of life here is extremely poor as far as I'm concerned. For now, I'm fortunate enough to be living with my parents and am saving everything I make for the day I get the hell out of here after I am married next year. My fiancee has been here 6 months and wants out already.

Yuppies and transplants with the rudest, shallowest, and coldest personalities seem to reside here in undeniable force. Wow! You took the words right out of my mouth. Your statement pretty much sums up the reason why I left Maryland. You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned, "And MD claims to be a liberal state, but when you see how it treats minorities, particularly those who WANT to do something productive and positive with their lives, the treatment they get by BOTH SIDES makes one think they were in Alabama." As a minority, I couldn't have agreed with you more. Believe me, you will not regret leaving there.

I'm leaving MD sometime in the first half of 2008, but not for the same reasons as some of the other people on this thread. I'll be moving to LA, which I prefer much more over MD. I'm not looking to live in a rural environment.

small voice - I LOVE MARYLAND - in one state you can see mountains- the Atlantic Ocean - the Chesapeake Bay - Civil War History - and close to Washington DC to visit by train - Arlington VA - The National Zoo - Skyline Drive in Autumn - so MANY natural wonders and museums it is amazing.end small voice
However - as someone who remembers what it USED to be - Maryland can seem a bit soiled and sordid now - but so is everywhere else.
It is expensive to live in the areas close to the Beltway or Metro - traffic is a nightmare 24/7- a HUGE immigrant population who can take the driving written test in SEVENTEEN languages (but the street signs are all English)
are ALL negativity issues.
But (shh - don't tell anyone) the Eastern Shore is wonderful - and I LOVE when the sign on the bridge says "Welcome to Queen Anne's County"
Ya'll come visit - the blue crabs are still running and oyster season lasts till April

Can't wait to leave!!
I'll be moving to Southern CA in about a month, January at the latest and I can't wait. The weeks always seem to go by slow when you have something to look forward to. I attended Howard University in Washington D.C. for two years before I had to leave because I couldn't afford to stay. Since then I've been working as a secretary for a sp. ed. school and I'm definitely ready to go back and finish my degree.
I just feel stuck here like I'm not doing anything with my life and time waits for no one. Born and raised here in Baltimore, I feel like there's nothing here for me anymore. I'm stuck here at this dead-end job with no room for advancement every day when I'd rather be in school right now and working toward my goals. I'll be able to finish school for free in CA and escape the harsh winters we get here in MD. Can't beat that.

I grew up on a small horse farm in Harford County and lived in MD (Baltimore County and Bel Air) from 1994 until this July. During that time I saw the whole county basically paved over and a lot of the horse farms turned into house farms. We moved to Tucson, AZ a couple months ago. There are several reasons we moved, but mainly we wanted a change of scenery in an affordable area.
There are many things to like about MD - our friends and families, the mountains, the beach, the bay, the seafood (I'd kill for a crabcake!!) but it has its issues too - crime, overpriced housing, taxes, etc.
We probably won't stay in Tucson forever, but there's a good chance we won't settle back down in MD either.

Mom 21, Inner city Hagerstown (3 to 5 blocks from the square, depending on the direction) is mostly apartment buildings. Also, double houses and single family houses as you move away from the square. I have heard of property owners being called by local officials trying to convince them to convert to Section 8. I know people who have given up trying to rent to decent, working people and converted. Don't miss understand, I don't have a problem with poor folks, I've struggled a lot myself. Being low income does not disqualify you from having dignity, respect and some manners. I really believe Baltimore and the Metro areas have cleaned up some of their problems by sending them up I70 and dumping them here.
As a side note, in a previous post, I chastised the Hagerstown police for a lack of interest in a burglary of my residence. I need to apologize to the HPD and say that they did follow up after a few phone calls and the property has been recovered for the most part. I believe the rank and file officers are trying to do a good job but are understaffed, overwhelmed and frustrated by a lack of support from "higher-ups".
In the end, I am tired of the drama, the government intrusion, taxes and regulations and the humorless, ill-mannered, unethical people. I'll be gone in a few weeks, I feel better already.
