Towson is fine. It is 20 minutes north of downtown Baltimore. It is an older suburb with some new condo/apt. housing mixed in. It is a fairly safe area with a lot of shopping, e.g., Towsontown Mall is one of the largest more upscale malls in the area. There is boutique shopping with restaurants, movies, a large public library all within a few minutes walk of one another. Traffic can be a drag but coming from Atlanta it shouldn't seem like much. Not much crime in the area, several large hospitals and universities surround Towson. It's basically an older suburb with some new housing/shopping mixed in, just inside the Baltimore Beltway (695). good luck.

I actually moved from Sandy Springs/Dunwoody to Towson back in 2003.

It's a great neighborhood. The thing I like is that the countryside is literally just outside the beltway from Towson, but it still borders good areas of Baltimore City. It would be Baltimore's counterpart to Sandy Springs/Dunwoody/Buckhead.
