HELP!! Relocation to FROSTBURG!
Whoever can help me out here, bless you..
cause the Internet is doing nothing for me!
I am moving to the state right after the new year. My boyfriend got a job in Luke, MD.. But we heard it's very small there. I will more than likely being going to Frostburg State. He said the cities are 20 minutes apart.
Is the town based solely on college students or other people?
Would it be a good place to live if he works in Luke?
And please help me out with some apartment numbers.. mostly off campus.
I would appreciate it more than anything.
Also, I am currently in PA. I work as a teacher at a learning center/day care.
Are there any in Frostburg?
And.. How far is Frostburg from Cumberland?

If your boyfriend got a job in Luke he must be working for the paper mill. The town of Luke has about 90 people and smells like the mill. Frostburg is a college town but is not soley based on college students. I would estimate about 1/3 of the population during the school year is students.
I think Frostburg would be a good place to live if your boyfriend works in the mill. Because of the college, Frostburg is about as openminded and welcoming to outsiders as you can get in Western Maryland. If you live any closer to the mill you will be transplanting yourself into the very insular small towns of Georges Creek where it will be very hard to assimilate.
I don't have any college apartments to give you. Check out the classifides at Cumberland Times-News - Homepage for apartment listings.
Cumberland is about 12 miles and 1200 feet in elevation from Frostburg. It would be a another good choice for a place to live, but it would take at least 35 minutes for your boyfriend to get to Luke.

At least it's a safe city, and if you like winter, you will LOVE it! Personally, I wish I could live somewhere like that.

NOTHING in Frostburg ???!!!??? Not true. There are plenty of restaurants, bars, house parties, and the college has cultural things like music, comedy, plays, art shows on a weekly basis. And of course, any sort of outdoor activity, hunting, fishing, hiking, skiing, kayaking, is close by.
Georgetown it ain't, but if can't find something to do up there you are not looking very hard.

I lived in Frostburg proper a couple of years, then spent a year or two in La Vale, then a couple more years living in Cumberland. I very much enjoyed my time living in Western Maryland. It was only my father’s death that forced me to leave the area and return to the family place in Bladensburg.
I originally went to Frostburg to complete my degree and early on met a woman from a respected local family - which I believe helped to ease me in with many locals - even those unassociated with the college. I found at least a general level of acceptance most places I went in Allegany County. But, I was at least age 30 by the time I got there.
Even though I had once lived in rural Calvert County - I still found Frostburg to be a quiet place - which I found went well with study. However, Frostburg was also a town in an interesting, often colorful region owning a college-town ‘Main Street’ strip of shops, bars and characters.
IMO, it will be important that one need to at least consider if not out-right enjoy sometimes-heavy winter weather conditions if one is going to live happily high up in Frostburg (winter weather is worse in Garrett County of course). One of the years I lived on Main Street in Frostburg, I believe it snowed 147 inches over the winter season (it was a big blizzard year that year –’93 or ’94 I think).
IMO, Western Maryland, from climate, to terrain, to people, is an experience unlike anything else seen in the state – certainly it was unlike anything that I had ever known as a PG County boy or Marylander. I believe that I benefited from my time and the experience that I gained while living in that region.

Stuart's right... It just depends on what entertains you. If you are a club rat, you'll be bored off your butt. If you are an active and outdoors type, it'll be beautiful. All things considered, the peace and quiet has got to be good for the body and mind... Clean air, beautiful surroundings, no traffic... Sigh...
Quite honestly, I'd love to try it out a few years, but you get paid bigger bucks in the city. Can't give that up yet

Gosh I wish you guys would stop posting about Frostburg! I YEARN to live in a place like that! ... deep, double sigh ... I'd even be willing to do a two hour one way commute if I thought I could get a decent paying job that close. Unfortunately, DH and kids would be probably just say "buh bye. Send us a postcard."

I just moved to this area from PA, 2 months ago. I used to live not too far from Lansdale. I still have to go back once a month for work. It's funny because the last time I was in Lansdale, I was talking to one of my co-workers and she said her sister was moving to this area and that her sister's significant other had gotten a job in Luke. What a coincidence!
I don't know what part of PA you are from but if it's close to Philadelphia, like I was, get ready for culture shock. Westside boy is correct when he mentions all of the amenities that Frostburg has to offer. Because there is not the plethora of shops that exists in the Southeastern region of PA, we have become a fixture at college and local arts performances. Thank goodness for Frostburg State! Although I have yet to go, Altoona is about an hour away from Cumberland and Hagerstown, about the same.
People in Cumberland and Frostburg have been very friendly. I can't speak for the smaller areas but the assessment given by Westside Boy seems accurate. Although people here have been friendly, however, I still feel very much like an outsider. IMHO, I don't think people do it deliberately. It's just that everyone knows everyone else, went to one of the two local high schools, and grew up around the corner from so and so. So it's not as transient as say, Philadelphia. This can be a good thing if you are from here; but it makes meeting people a challenge since they don't really need new friends.

LaVale isn't far and Cumberland has a mall, so don't let anyone scare you saying there isn't anything to do. And heck you can always hop on 68 and hed up to Morgantown.
