Hi. I'm currently finalizing my choices on relocation from Northeast Ohio to a new city. I've been trying to secure a job before moving for awhile now with no success and I realize the next best option really is to pack up and go to a new location. I'm 28 and single. I possess a 4-year degree in Political Science and International Relations. I also possess internship experience doing research, editing and report drafting, including from a DC-based think tank in the past.

The DC area is on my shortlist of areas as I'm finalizing my decision. I'm curious to know if there are many others here who have just packed up and moved to this area without a job lined up and how wise that may be to do right now? I have saved up a large sum of money to get by for a few months to 6-7 months from doing my research on over all living costs.

It will be difficult to rent a place to live without a job.

Most of the jobs in your field will be with a government agency, a hiring process that can take up to a year. You might want to contact that think tank for an opening. Even that's a crap shoot between the sequestration and. now, the shutdown.

I did that many yrs. ago (moved to Reston from Pgh.) - but times have changed. I agree that it's likely much more difficult to rent w/o a job - you might be able to find something like sharing, a basement in a private home, etc. that would let you get in if you pay at least 6 mos. up front.

Keep in mind that people in that area usually have advanced degrees from well known schools. A four-year degree may not be sufficient.

I say go for it... get a part-time job (7/11, pizza hut, mall, etc - friend of mine worked at starbucks, now works at patent office) to make your other money last longer (or better don't touch your other money at all... since you think you have 6 months to live off, it really means you have 3 months). Rent a room or apartment with roommates.

If you are looking for a gov't job, I admit, it is hard right now. It takes a long time for those jobs to go through... around 4 to 8 months from what I see.

Good luck.
