How is Waldorf, MD? (Clinton, Fort Washington: crime, houses, transferring to)

Relocating to the Maryland/DC Area and was wondering how Waldorf is?

It is actually a very nice suburban community but a bit too far away from DC for my liking....You could probably look at at getting a nice house there with a lawn in a price range that is more affordable than say in Montgomery County. Also another option might be to look at the Fort Washington area which about 20-25 minutes from DC area- You have easy access to the cool areas in Downtown DC but have the suburban like feel in your neighborhood. You have the Tantallon Golf Course there and the Fort Washington Marina which has some beautiful houses with the much acclaimed National Harbor project being built right in the neighborhood. From what I hear, that is a great place to buy an investment property ...Good Luck!

If you are commuting to D.C. there's lots of people that do that, and many that hate it. It is a nice area, but please choose carefully. Waldorf is in a building frenzy and is sticking house on every inch of land that's available. Right now people living in the lovely subdivision of Wexford Village are faced with them trying to put multi-family dwellings that back all the way up to their backyards -- an area that is now a lovely wooded section. I'm sure if people had known that would happen they would not have chosen the area. If you have a wooded view today, you might not have it tomorrow --you might be looking in somebody's kitchen or bedroom window! Best bet may be to go with older sections that have wooded views that belong to the home owners!

I agree with the two previous posts. Waldorf is a great place but as it develops, its trading its pros and cons.

Developers are chopping down a lot of the wooded areas that makes Waldorf so desirable and putting "Luxury Homes" on every square inch available. It's good because it raises property values, but at the same time a beautiful and secluded rural town turns into another sprawling suburbia. In addition, there is still only one way in and out, Rte 5, so traffic can be heavy.

As for crime, i've noticed it has gotten worse over the years. Nice little shops that once graced Clinton and Suitland got tired of the degenerates, so they moved to Waldorf. Now the PG degenerates are hopping in their financed 300M's and heading to Waldorf.

I am very familiar with the area that SAB mentions and I believe that it is in fact the best value location in the greater metropolitan area. I have even gotten in trouble for sounding too positive about this area. I am not selling anything, but this location only place where you can live on a private golf course for around $500k or on the waterfront for around a million. Regular homes can be bought in the $400s. The pro's far outweigh the con's.

To be clear, the name "Tantallon" includes a number of subdivisions/neighborhoods with variants of the name (North, South, Hills, Square, etc.) There are differences, but they are all nice.

My husband is most likely transferring to Andrews AFB (he's a civilian) this summer. We are looking at Waldorf. We are in our 40's and are very active and have no children. Is Waldorf safe enough for a woman to take walks/runs around town alone....if you use common sense? Any other input would be appreciated.

there are nice communities in waldorf and there are not so nice. stay away from st. charles area - if your husband can deal with a little more of a commute, i would look south of waldorf in la plata or east in st. mary's or calvert counties. go to the charles county sheriff's website and they have crime statistics for each neighborhood. Definitely look at that before choosing a development.

Waldorf has all of the local shopping amenities, and in terms of convenience, it's tops! If you're willing to stretch your commute out a little bit, you should consider looking in Hughesville or La Plata in order to avoid the congestion and heavy population density. La Plata is more suburban than Hughesville, and they both have a certain charm about them, IMHO
