Hello,

I will be starting a new job located in Northern Virginia. My job location will be in either Chantilly or McLean. Unfortunately, I am confined to living in Md (fiance's job). What would be good locations to live in Md so that I can minimize my commute? I realize commute times will be different for Chantilly and McLean, and appreciate any information on both. We are looking to rent something under $2000. A rural setting would be nice, but not necessary. If anyone is making similar commutes, please let me know how long it takes. Thank you in advance!

Well there are three routes across the Potomac

Cabin John Bridge (Beltway)

Whites Ferry ( closed sometimes due to high/low water or ice)

Point of Rocks Bridge ( US 15).

I used to commute down US 15 from Frederick to both Mclean and Chantilly but it has been a number of years.

You should forget a rural setting if you want a reasonable commute. You could afford an apartment in Rockville, Kensington, Chevy Chase or Bethesda. Your commute to McLean could be as short as 35 minutes on a good day, or 50 on congested days. The commute out to Chantilly I'd estimate more like 55 to 65 minutes.

I used to live in the 20902 zipcode of Silver Spring and commuted for years to Tysons, Fairfax, and Herndon. I occasionally made trips to Chantilly and hated the long drive, even against traffic.

I used to do Gaithersburg to Tyson's and it was, on average, a 75-90 minute commute each way, unless there was an accident. Most of that was trying to get over the bridge. I would highly recommend living in VA as your girlfriend will be going against the worst of the traffic (although it still won't be a good commute).

US 15 to Point of Rocks could be an option for the OP depending on exactly where the fiance's job is.

To answer that, we need the location of the fiance's job.

Sorry for the delayed response. He will be in md state police, which is why we have to live in md. He will get his "wish list" of counties he wants to work in. He will decide this list by which counties provide me the shortest commute. Thank you for any help!

Frederick County (Frederick Barracks), Montgomery County (Rockville Barracks would be the closest to where you would be working

Washington County (Hagerstown Barracks), or Carroll County (Westminster Barracks) would probably be the next best. Of course there are the 'forget it' locations like Eastern Shore, Northeast (Cecil County) or far western MD :-)

I think looking at going down US-15 through Point of Rocks would be your best option so I would be looking outwards from there.
