Default Hyattsville near Cheverly Metro station - a bad area?

It looked ok, but I still am not sure. Is it a livable area? Should I have any concerns?

Cheverly itself is pretty nice. The downside is that it's surrounded by some not-so-nice areas (Bladensburg, Landover Hills, etc) and some dangerous areas (Landover/Kentland, Fairmount Heights, the Kenilworth neighborhood in NE DC -- the area along Kenilworth Ave NE, 45th St NE, Quarles St NE etc has been an open-air drug market for years)

The area I'm talking about is the 20875 zipcode(residential area) and considered 'palmer park'. That's an ok area to live right? People keep scaring me about PG County. I know to stay away from Suitland, but is the 20875 area of hyattsvile a no-live, no-go zone as well?

Palmer Park (I've been told) is probably the most dangerous area of PG. You may want to look inside the actual city limits of Hyattsvile and New Carrollton. These parts are a little more removed from the DC/PG line and are more stable.

Palmer Park can be pretty rough too, but it's not like you're going to get shot just for walking down the street. Personally, I would visit the area at night during the week and weekends, to see if it's the type of environment you'd be comfortable living in.

These links might help:
burgersub.org - maps of murder
This shows a map of where murders have occurred in the county (and the rest of the state + DC) this year

Prince George's County - Police Department - Neighborhood Crime Mapping
At the top left, click "search for crime". Type in the address of the house you're looking at and it will show you what crimes have happened in neighborhood in the past 3 months

On the positive side, the Prince George's County Police Department headquarters is in Palmer Park on Barlowe Road, FedEx Field is on the other side of Sheriff Road if you ever want to go to a Redskins game, and there's easy access to the Beltway.

Palmer Park MIGHT be doing a little changing, but its certainly not there yet. I wouldn't do it.

What could happen to me? The area is residential and the home owner said he has lived there two years and hasn't had any issues.

Nothing will happen to you. If you are in a nice residential community you will be fine. Folks need to stop judging an entire area. These people cannot tell you what will happen to you because they have never step foot in the area and they know nothing about the area except what they hear on TV. There are no area that is 100% crime free. Each and every area have a bad area but that doesnot mean the entire area is bad, same goes for Palmer Park.

ok, I know Suitland is an area I definitely shouldn't live in however the part of Hyattsville where I want to live is residential and the guy has lived there two years and says he hasn't had any issues. I don't want to end up getting raped or robbed or killed though. I really don't know. Perhaps I should check out the area this weekend to see. hmm
