Hughesville, MD? (Waldorf: home, to buy, subdivisions)

Anyone have information on Hughesville, MD? Is it a nice area? Shopping etc.?

Hughesville is a wonderful area, but it is much more rural than suburban. There are many subdivisions in the area, but commercial development is fairly quiet.

There was a road bypass put in recently on Rt. 5 to reduce traffic volume of commuters passing through from St. Mary's County, and it's caused a significant decrease in motorist volume through the main road in Hughesville.

If you're looking for a quiet setting, Hughesville is for you. Major shopping typically requires a short trip into either Waldorf or Mechanicsville.

I think it's mixed nuts.

Waldorf is a much better area in the sense that it has more shopping options, closer proximity to D.C., more places to dine, etc. There are a lot of options there for convenience in general. It would definately be considered suburban.

Hughesville is much less densely populated, and therefore does not have as many options in this respect. Housing-wise, Hughesville does allow you to buy a home for the same price as you would in Waldorf, but you're able to get a comparable home on .5-3 acres instead of .3 acres like in Waldorf.

What is more important to you- a large yard, added privacy, and laid back setting, or better proximity to D.C. and a 5 minute drive to the mall?

I prefer Hughesville. That being said, I live in Waldorf because my wife wants to be closer to work. To each their own I suppose.

I agree with Jonathan. I live in Hughesville. We moved from Waldorf 8 years ago to get a bigger yard and more privacy. It's really a personally preference.

We also like Hughesville's close proximity to the Patuxent River.

If you like far too many cars and people trying to occupy the same space you are it might be. Waldorf was a small Charles county blip on the map and went crazy when the unplanned community that is St Charles city exploded and sprawled over much of that region.
