Things to see/do in 2 days?
Best sushi:
Best night spot(s) (low key, maybe a great Irish pub):
Best shopping:
Best park (dog friendly):
I read somewhere mountains were close by, exactly where?
Anything else I should visit?
Thanks!

There are plenty of nice areas just outside the city, for instance Walkersville up rt. 194 is nice(excluding Discovery a neighborhood in Walkersville), and just a few minutes from Frederick. Middletown is also nice and is connected to a major restaurant and shopping area in Rt 40. Other than that a drive to the New Market area is relatively short, no more than 25-30 minutes at peak times. Best Sushi....hmm...There are quite a few places that are good Japanese Steakhouses, Miyako on Rt. 40, Matsutake on Rt. 85 by Westview movie theaters, and Hinode on C. Creek. Nightspots like an irish pub would be Olde Towne Tavern on N. Market, Firestones is a nice bar, there are many others! Also check out Weinberg Center for the Arts to see if any shows are playing while you are in town. Finally...a good dog park would be Baker Park or Culler Lake. Hope that helps

Great information, thanks for sharing!!
Would you say towns like Walkersville and Middletown offer more land and better pricing on homes?

generally I would say that those places would offer more bang for your buck. also if you want some more information about possibly places closer to D.C., such as Germantown and Gaithersburg, www.Beyonddc.com has little write-ups about areas.

Don't forget thurmont and PA
I live in Carroll Valley PA(S. of Gettysburg,PA) it is about 30-40 minutes to Frederick. The traffic is nothing until you get to Frederick. Germantown is nice too. Houses up here are a lot cheaper though and there is skiing golf, etc snow... Something to think about though. In Thurmont you get to wave and the President as well as Camp David is very close by...

Best Sushi: Kyoko - I've been there many times. It's a Thai/Sushi place on Patrick St, downtown. Small, nice ambience. Cafe Kyoko - Japanese & Thai Restaurant. Frederick, MD.
Best nightspots/shopping: Just walk around downtown on Main St & take your pick. You will love downtown Frederick.
Mountains: Coming out the main Detrick gate, proceed down Military Rd. to Rosemont. Turn right onto Rosemont. Rosemont becomes Yellow Springs becomes Hamburg. After about 10 min total driving time, the road winds uphill through woods and reaches the ridge summit, which has parking for the Catoctin Trail.
A lot of people would love to live in Frederick, but can't because of prohibitive commutes. You are very lucky to work at Detrick and be able to live in Frederick, if you choose! Two nice streets to look at, should decide to buy, are Lee Pl. and Wilson Pl. just outside the Detrick gate, off 7th St. Quality, older homes and very reasonable by DC standards.

Awesome info, Tim, thanks! I will definitely try Kyoko. Hopefully I'll have time to drive to the mountain range, but will surely take a look at Lee Pl. and Wilson Pl. Downtown Frederick sounds wonderful, I can't wait to visit!

You're welcome. I'm pretty familiar with that area because I used to live on Lee. Wilson probably has the nicer homes though, although it's a busier street. The next street east is Grant which is worth checking out too. Any further east and you'll start getting some road noise from Rt.15.
A nice "approach" into downtown Frederick from Detrick would be to turn left onto Rosemont, instead of right towards the mountains. It takes you by the Hood College campus, and across from Hood, one of the premier residential areas in Frederick. Very walkable, expensive. Norman Rockwell-esque. Rosemont then becomes Dill, turn right on Bentz and left on Church and you're there. I used to drive that route when taking visitors downtown.

I can't believe anyone would suggest GERMANTOWN over Frederick! Germantown is primarily for DC commuters and is nothing but tract homes and strip malls. No personality, no charm--bleh

How would the traffic be on I-270 from Frederick to Gaithersburg at 3 or 4pm on Friday? I'm thinking about visiting that area on my way back to Dulles Friday evening. And then how would the traffic be from Gaithersburg to Dulles around 5:30/6pm?
Thanks!!
