Hi there,

Me and my wife are looking into moving to Salisbury, MD. We are wondering if this area is a gay friendly place? We will be moving from New York so this is a big move for us. I cant wait though as i have reserched Maryland and think it is a beautiful place to live.

Any help on this matter would be great. Thank you

I have a friend that lives in Salisbury who is lesbian. She has no problems. However, she said the eastern shore can be a bit "meh" in some places with respect towards LGBT. Good luck! Where do you have to work? I think I may know of a couple other LGBT friendly places. (Not too familiar with MD yet, but I know some places from past experiences.)

Eastern Shore has a bit of a "southern" attitude towards it, i.e. if the bible doesn't say it, it isn't so... That's only a few places though, maybe Salisbury isn't as bad though.

Question for the OP: when you say "my wife," do you mean that you are a man in a heterosexual marriage, and you're curious as to how life is for gay people in Salisbury? Or are you a woman in a lesbian marriage?

I ask because, as you probably know, gay marriage has recently been legalized in Maryland. However, the Eastern Shore counties (which includes Wicomico, of which Salisbury is the county seat) voted against it. My point is that the majority of the people on the Shore are not in favor of gay marriage, even if they might otherwise be fine with a gay or lesbian person. I can't speak to Salisbury specifically, as I'm not familiar enough with it to say; but you may wish to be aware that not everyone will accept you and your spouse as being "really" married, regardless of what piece of paper you may possess from New York State.

Wicomico County is the most suburban county than the rest of the Eastern Shore. Salisbury has more diversity and is more open to LGBT lifestyle than the other counties. Most because of Salisbury University and U of MD Eastern Shore in neighboring Somerset County.

Even the Mayor of Salisbury is openly gay. He won re-election twice. Just saying.. lol
