Hey all,

Looking for advice on how to go about getting teaching jobs in Southern MD. It isn't for myself, it is for my fiance' she is certified in Health/Phys Ed and has her VA license and her Masters. She transferred her license or whatever the process is so that she can teach in MD now. Unfortunately when doing a search online for Health/Phys Ed teaching jobs in MD, particularly southern MD there aren't many results, especially compared to Virginia openings.

Any tips on the best way to go about finding and obtaining teaching jobs? We live in La Plata and are looking for opportunities for her for the coming school year after summer. Is there a certain time the openings tend to start popping up? Is the lack of listings in MD due to it being much more competitive than VA in terms of teacher slots or lack of funding etc? We are trying to avoid her having to commute into DC for a teaching job but that seems to be the closest place with openings, that or into VA in PWC, Fairfax etc

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

Openings will start to show up around the end of the school year. Retirees will start notifying their systems about their retirement.

The drop dead date for tenured staff to resign/retire is around July 15. You may get more openings then.

Keep in mind that the student population in many DC area jurisdictions is stabilizing or even dropping so staff is being cut at many schools.

Thanks for that response. We figured that might be the case, that openings will show up as the school year comes to a close.

As far as DC like you mentioned, is that due to more people moving into the surrounding suburbs/school districts?

Some of it is kids ageing out of the schools, some of it is movement between jurisdictions (Black flight out of Prince George's to Charles County, for example), some of it parents opting for private school. That's for the DC Metro area as a whole.

Interesting about the black flight.. We are located in Charles County and ideally would like for her to find a position in this county so she wouldn't have to commute far but there seems to be basically no openings at the moment in her field of Health/Phys Ed.
