Hello everyone, I recently moved to the Columbia area and will be working downtown DC near Union Station can you please tell which is the best way to commute, the MARC, Metro, commuter or to drive? Thanks.

Unless you have parking paid for by your employer, I believe the best way is the MARC train. But, you have to factor in the time and cost of getting to the MARC station. If you get paid parking, then the fastest way is to drive.

It is also worth looking at the MTA Commuter bus schedules for the 915, 929 and 995 routes. They will bring you to south of the Capital Mall, or leave you at the Silver Spring Metro.

I'd suggest experimenting with the options before you commit to a monthly ticket.

And had you asked before the move...
you would have been advised to live as close to a MARC station as possible.

Thanks for the info. Which MARC station should I use if I live near the Columbia Mall?

If you are planning on parking there, I think this one with almost 1000 spaces is best: Savage, at 9009 Dorsey Run Rd. Dorsey has more limited parking, but may be OK if you can be dropped off.

Info on fares and schedules is here: MARC Train | Maryland Transit Administration

The Dorsey lot typically does not fill up. I don't believe that Savage does either, though I'm not entirely certain. Dorsey is slightly closer to the Mall, but Savage is the next stop closer to D.C. Call it a draw. Both of these stations are on the Camden Line, which is the slower of the two rail lines to D.C. The Penn Line (which shares track with Amtrak) is much faster, but the stations are somewhat farther away from Columbia. (The closest two Penn Line stops are BWI Airport, which is a pay lot, or Odenton, which is free, but typically does fill up, I think.)

All three of the MTA commuter buses (915, 929, and 995) stop at the Columbia Mall. However, none of them stop at Union Station. The closest stop is Capitol Hill (1st & Independence S.E.) which, while walkable, is a little bit of a hike.

I'm going to second Golden Age's suggestion to try the different lines and see which one works best for you.

I do not know if this as good as your other options but just to let you know there is an ICC commuter bus 203 that goes from Columbia Mall to Medical Center metro in Bethesda (and then u would take the metro to Union Station) if u are interested-below is the schedule (the ICC 201 bus from Shady Grove metro and Gaithersburg to BWI is 5$-I assume this bus is the same price)
