Tell Me About Easton
Hi--I recently posted about a possible move to the Eastern Shore. After some research, we are leaning towards living in Easton (the job is in Cambridge). I have lots of questions and I am hoping some locals, or anyone with knowledge of Easton, can help. Are there many options for buying organic/ natural foods? We belong to an organic food co-op here in Michigan and we are hoping to find something similar in MD--or at least a Whole Foods Market or something similar.
I would also love some insight into the neighborhoods in Easton. We have been looking at houses on realtor.com and have found a few ok looking homes in our range but don't know if they are in nice/ not so nice parts of town. We do plan to go and check it out, but any advice would be great.
Thanks!

If you use the search option for Easton, there should be an Easton thread started by pkoons which has quite a bit of info, and some pics too.

I haven't lived on the shore for about 7 years, but when I did I spent a lot of time in Easton. It's definitely more progressive than most other areas on the shore (relatively speaking - it's still a slower pace than what you're probably used to). There is a store called Railway Market that specializes in more holistic/organic/natural fare. Obviously it costs more than Giant or Safeway, but you'll probably be satisfied with what they have to offer. It's been in business for at least 15 years and they've expanded once, so they aren't going anywhere. It's very popular. There is no Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. The closest place you'll find those is Annapolis, Md (about an hour and 15 minutes drive).
I don't remember of any particular communities that were better or worse. My sister lived in a little development called Crofton and it was neat and tidy. Lots of kids. Easton is growing by leaps and bounds and there are new communities springing up. You'll have to visit it yourself to truly get a feel for what you want.
As far as bad parts of town, I do remember my sister telling me to avoid Port Street.
Oh, and since the entire Eastern Shore is still mostly rural, there are TONS of farmers' fruit and vegetable stands on Rt. 50 in the summer. Good, fresh veggies at a good price (although I seriously doubt it's organic, but that's about as fresh and you can get).

Hey- The Amish Farmers market also has some organics. It is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday. If you need a realtor, I have a guy who I trust, and was also a custom homebuilder. So he knows the area well, and also property. Let me know.
