I work in MD and my wife works in NY. I want to buy a new car in NY. The dealer in NY said the total title and registration fee for Maryland is more than $600. Is this true? Also I own a MD plated old car if I transfer the old plate to the new car, the dealer said it will cost around $400. I check the MVA web but can't figure out how much these two cases will cost. Would you please help? Thank you!

The Registration is for two years if I remember correctly. The cost for transferring will vary depending how much time is left on the current registration and what class the current and new car are (weight, 'Multipurpose', etc)

Where is your legal residence?
Buy, title and register the car there.

Excise tax (title) is 6% of sale amount. ~$10,000 car = $600
Add for plates (registration).

You still pay excise tax on the new car.
Plus some portion of the registration fees.
