Hi All,

In early stages of researching a move to this area. Work locations are Silver Spring, Rockville. I like Hagerstown for small town feel and lower real estate prices. Coming from Colorado.

Is a daily commute from Hagerstown to Silver Spring feasible? what is the traffic like? Says time is about an hour (?)

thanks,

Kris

The hour is when there is no traffic. Add 30 minutes or more in the morning rush.

Agree, Rockville is around an hour without traffic. If you don't have to travel during peak rush hour, it wouldn't be too bad. The 991 Commuter bus runs from the MVA at Hagerstown off of MD Route 65 to Shady Grove Metro Station a half dozen or so times each morning, if you want to do public transportation.

It may be an hour from Hagerstown to Rockville without traffic but there is traffic from 5 AM until 10 PM! Silver Spring would be MUCH LONGER.

Having commuted down I-270 for the last 14+ years to Shady Grove Road from Frederick/Middletown I would not want to be much further out (Maybe Myersville) When I first came back to the Frederick Area after being in the USAF I commuted from Frederick to Silver Spring (That was from 1986-88) Traffic wasn't quite as bad then as it is now but I-270 from the Beltway up to Md 121 had much less capacity so the commute was about as bad as it is now up to that point. From Rt 121 on out to Frederick I-270 hasn't changed in the 25+ years since then and traffic has grown much worse.

If you can use some combination of MTA Commuter Bus/Metro/MARC to get to your work sites the commute from Hagerstown might just be doable but it will be marginal on most days and on Fridays (And especially before Holidays) it will be sheer H3!!.

The commute from Germantown to Silver Spring was a PITA unless I used the MARC train and that only works if you work in downtown Silver Spring. 270 sucks, especially in the two lane stretch south of Frederick, but it's pretty congested the entire way and the beltway is more of the same. I wouldn't do it everyday.

Yeah take our advice. Please. This will be a horrible commute. At the very least consider Frederick, won't avoid the bad congested part of the ride but at least it's 20 minutes closer.

What is the SS address? Maybe you could take 70 to 29 south if it's north SS.
