I'm looking for suggestions for a weekend getaway spot on the Eastern Shore. My boyfriend and I live in DC but are looking to get away for a weekend at the end of the summer but when trying to research where to go it seems like there are so many options. From what I've found I think we're leaning towards St. Michael's or Chincoteague, any suggestions?

I grew up on the beach in NJ (Cape May/Atlantic City areas), and we're spending a week with family up there prior to our getaway, so I'm trying to stay away from places similar to that (i.e. no Ocean City, MD) because we're looking for a change of pace.

Any and all insight would be greatly appreciated!

You options are quite different: a quaint small town vs. a remote beach. So it depends on your budget and preferences. We have stayed at St. Michael's at Harbourtowne which runs $200+/night and enjoyed it. You can see most of the tourist attractions in 2 days, but be sure to get some steamed crabs.

OTOH, you can go camping on Chincoteague for budget rates. I haven't personally stayed there, but it looks beautiful.

St. Michael's is beautiful but you'll walk through the town in one day and be done. There are a bunch of boutiques that cater to the 50+ crowd fashion/decor-wise. Just my two cents. If you're looking to be at the beach, I'd vote Assateague or Chincoteague.

I'd vote for Assateague (especially if you're outdoorsy and love camping) or Berlin.

Stick by the bay side then. The Eastern Shore is fairly large and very rural, each county has it's own character when you really explore the area and get to know it.

There are plenty of Bed & Breakfasts all throughout the E.S. with many along the bay or it's many inlets. Assateague is a good suggestion that has been made, but the best time to go is probably Spring or Fall.

You might also consider checking out the Virginia section of the Delmarva, either the ocean side or the bay side (which are like 20 minutes apart at the most) which is very laid back and relaxed.

As for activities, well if you're like my wife and I (basically old people at least mentally) and don't mind put-put and just sitting on a hammock and reading, then you can do that no problem.
