If someone is interested in bar-hopping the night away then they'll need to go into DC, but for an average person looking to catch a show or grab drinks w/friends the nightlife offerings are more than adequate.
You've been helping me out with this on the MD suburbs sub-forum but this may be one place where Rockville betters Silver Spring with Gordon, the Rooftop and Bar Louie.

Bethesda's just a quick drive from SSpring for drinking/dancing without going into DC, right?

Correct, SS and Bethesda are about 4 miles apart. Takes about 10 minutes during off-peak traffic. Closer to 20 during rush hour (until Purple Line come along, at least). Silver Spring has a number of bars, but it's nowhere where it should be considering its size. There are probably about 150 restaurants, but only like 5 bars (more if you include hybrid restaurant/bars like Gordon Biersch, but still underserved to be sure). It's getting better - a new microbrewery opening up a couple weeks back, a new rooftop bar & lounge is opening up in the next couple weeks on Georgia Ave., a new upscale bar is opening this fall at Thayer Ave. & Georgia Ave., a new sports bar has been announced on Bonifant Ave. next door to a wine bar that's also under construction, but yeah, people are rightfully clamoring for more and can't wait for the next round of openings.

I can't believe I'm reading about The Quarry House. I bartended there when I was in college and a few years after, early 80's. It was a very cool Cheers type of neighborhood hangout that was busy after work but dead on the weekends.

Back then it was hard to find, now the new owners for some reason have taken the sign down. I have no idea how anyone finds it.

Tempted to stop in to see what it's like but it's not on the way to anywhere for me now

Haha, the internet, my friend. It's hilarious because google can pinpoint the corner for you, but there's always a couple people standing outside saying "I think it's down there...." It's about as underground (both literally and figuratively) as you can get in the 21st century.
