Hello,
We are a Navy family looking for an awesome neighborhood to live in while my husband does some work in the Navy Yard for about 2 years.
We currently live in San Diego and my kids attend amazing public schools, both 10/10 on greatschools.net. We live close (biking and walking distance) to trails, pools, parks, coffee shops, locally owned businesses. I would love to find a neighborhood with that same feel near the DC area but am at a total loss as far as the commute goes and there are SO many options as far as neighborhoods! I don't want total surburbia with only strip malls around. I don't mind that suburban feel, but I would love to be close by some sort of downtown area with locally owned businesses. Most important, however, are the schools. My father in law lives in Chevy Chase and I know that the schools are excellent there, but the houses are way out of our price range. We would need a home that is no more than $3200 for rent and we don't mind something smallish-our current house is only 1650 sq ft. and we are fine with it.
My final question...would it be crazy to live in Bethesda and commute to the Navy Yard? Would somewhere near Alexandria be better?
I know that I do not want to live more South, like Stafford or Fredericksburg. Done that and I was not a fan.
Thanks!

Bethesda has a nice downtown area, which is mostly apartments. You can probably find a house to rent for $3200 near some parks and recreation centers.

It is not crazy but the commute may be longish. If the commuter would have convenient parking in the Navy Yard, driving is possible. However, some of the parking options are time-consuming, like having to park in Anacostia and take a shuttle. It is also possible to take Metro from Bethesda to the Navy Yard.

On the whole, I'd agree with living in Bethesda because you want the great schools. I am not familiar with Alexandria schools, but you might ask about them in the Northern Virginia sub-forum.

Thanks for your response! I have looked into school in Alexandria (near Fort Hunt) and they are hit and miss, but I know nowhere near as great as Bethesda. Does Bethesda have a nice mix of urban/suburban life?

Yes, but not as large an urban area as San Diego. Take a look at some street views like this along Bethesda Avenue: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Be...b279f76a2bcd0d

Or this suburban area near Walt Whitman high School: https://www.google.com/maps/@38.9794...N9yFG6Z3gg!2e0

Downtown Bethesda is nice. I'd say Bethesda is a mix of urban and suburban. But also keep in mind it is a suburb of DC, so you have that. So I would say, yeah, its a pretty nice mix. I think all their schools are excellent too, but if you're looking for the very best, you'd probably like Walt Whitman. The commute from Bethesda to Annapolis is around 45 minutes - an hour in the worst case scenario.

Agree with the Walt Whitman suggestion.

The OP's husband was going to the Navy Yard in DC. That commute is at best 30-45 minutes by car, or an hour by Metro if he gets dropped off at the Metro stop.

I assumed the OP meant the Washington DC Navy Yard in Southest DC. It is the only Naval facility in the area which has the name "Yard" as it used to be a shipyard.
