Hi everyone,

I just moved from Rochester, Ny to live with family in Hanover, MD. I am willing to commute to American University in DC. I have a car but I am very inexperienced with driving for far distances. Also, I heard a lot about DC traffic and how horrible people described it. Is it really this bad? and as for a new driver is it manageable?
Lastly, what options do I have besides driving?

Thanks!

Drive to a close metro or bus. You could also do the MARC, which has stations by your location. You could also drive... you will learn quickly how to get around, or crash and have no choice but to use the train, bus or metro. lol

Metro - Home page

MARC Train | Maryland Transit Administration

And people always have something stupid to say about traffic... that is normal.

Driving or public transit -- it's a long commute....with transit likely shorter. (An hour maybe, but that's a guess just based on distance)

If you're THAT afraid to drive take the train/metro (which depending on when you have to go would likely be faster anyway. How much faster is the question.

You could also drive some days and train/metro others...depending on your schedule, and whether you want to be able to travel independent of any train/metro schedule.

THIS has info about the University shuttle from the closest Metro stop (Tenleytown/AU):

Metro - Directions - American University Washington College of Law

God luck!

This. MARC and Metro are your best bets. Hanover isn't far from the BWI MARC Station on the Penn Line.
