My friend lives in, or near, #1. Seems like a good place to me. #4, I have beento that community and it didn't strike me as a place I would want to live in, but I have no idea other than what I could see from my car.

This is always an interesting question, but every location has a function to it. It's not exact but it works and you can make a sort of game out of it...

There are three factors:
Safety
Price
Distance

There are pros and cons to each factor:
Safety: can either be Safe or Unsafe (relatively)
Price: can either be Cheap or Expensive
Distance: can be either Near or Far.

But Here's the Rub:
You can only pick two positives! and must sacrifice the remainder.

Safe + Near = Expensive (ritzy area)
Safe + Cheap = Far. ("drive until you can afford it")
Cheap + Near = Unsafe (hood)

In general I find this game applies fairly well to making decisions about where to locate yourself.

Heck, understanding that nearly everything has pros and cons and that you must sacrifice something (I choose commute since my family requires safety and I like somewhat inexpensive living) somewhere along the way is a good way to not go overboard on expectations and to also find out where your limitations are. This can apply to any decision making process and can help folks narrow down what options to consider and what to discard.

Of course, back to the game, you can always pick two cons! There are plenty of McMansions out in what used to be farm country that are both expensive and a long commute, but at least they will likely be safe, so that's the one positive.

Their website states that they are 'now open and available for move in'.

Meh, probably due to longer distances to care, drunk drivers and quite possibly other activities that put you in a higher risk. I'll take that over being mugged and beaten to death. At least I'll die living somewhere quiet, down to earth and friendly with whatever activities I'm allowed to partake in.

What do you consider "reasonable"? Do you need to commute to the District for work?

I used hotpads.com to check the communites in Prince Georges County along the border of DC, ranging from Takoma Park around to Oxon Hill. The cheapest 1 bedroom apartments are about $990 to $1000/month. For anything less, you would need to look at a basement room or room in a shared house.

I am familiar with Takoma Park, Adelphi, Langley Park, etc and consider them safe. I would also look at Oxon Hill.
