Let me see if I can move this forum into a more state wide benefits forum.
Okay, this was previously discussed in another forum, but I figured i'd tackle it here as well. It sort of goes with the power of being the Wealthiest State in the Country. What is the value of a Maryland Dollar in relation to other states? Certainly many Marylanders would argue they hate the high cost of living and their Maryland Dollars by them little in Maryland. However, because you're the wealthiest state that yields Marylanders who vacation or choose to eventually reside in other states beside Maryland much more buying power. While high cost and high prices are a huge burden when living in the state and doing all your business in the state. When you decided to travel else where remember it has tremendous benefits. The value of a Maryland Dollar buys you a sure hell of a lot in West Virginia, Delware, Parts of Pennsylvania, Parts outside of Northern Virginia, and many other places in the South. There is a huge benefit. I mentioned previously if you look at states individually and compare your earnings and wages in Maryland to somewhere else you could potentially live like a king. All you have to do is save, control spending, and reduce debt. When you decide to move to another state all those hard working Maryland dollars you made in Maryland will give you tremendous buying power in another state where the cost of living is not remotely close to that of the DC-Metro or Baltimore -Metro. This sort of argument can even be drawn down to a more localized forum. I could easily say because Montgomery County Maryland is much more "expensive" then all other jurisdictions in Maryland a Moco Dollar is considerably worth more than a (insert other Maryland County). I could also make the argument based on the list of 100 Wealthiest Towns, that a dollar in a certain town if the person were to move would give them considerable buying power. For instance a dollar in Potomac, MD is worth considerably more than a dollar in Dundalk, MD. I could make this argument on a county level between towns. A dollar in Ft.Washington, MD is considerably worth more than one in say Langley Park, MD. In closing you should not look at your high cost and high salaries as a burden, but think of ways in which you could potentially reduce your debt, increase your savings, and thus increase your buying power. |

Become a teacher in one of the higher paying school districts in the state. That will give you a 54% percent ( 3 highest years) pension after 30 years even more after 35 plus. Begin day one with a 403B and by 59 1/2 you will be set to retire. Take that to a lower costing state and along with the equity in your house you can buy a new house of equal quality for less with funds left over.

Go for it, regardless of what anyone says it is rewarding if done right and the life long benefits are awesome.

The only issues for most regarding a teacher is the income. Yes you will have an sucessful job title and a degree but the pay sucks. The average price for a home in maryland is around 250k-300k. The average pay for a teacher is 30k-40k a yr. Now how do the governement expect these teachers to live. I think its time for the governement to start paying these people right such as Teachers, police, firefighters. If thats what you want to do I say go ahead and do it. It is an awarding career. You will be helping thousands of children.

A teacher with a masters degree makes more- I know one who makes around 60-65k, and she's only been teaching for about 5 years.
Generally starting pay is around 40k- although it varies by county. |

Iscalder, the minimum starting salary for a certified teacher in PG is $43,481 so no certifed teacher makes less that that none. Top top of the scale at a minimum for a certified teacher is $76,821 and thats after 20 years. A new teacher working 30 years will get 54% of their final three year average as a pension for LIFE yepper for life. Other then a few select fields teaching starting salaries are often superior to private industry. How many Art, Phys Ed, Social Studies, English graduates can make that much? PG is not even the highest paying district in Maryland. It is up there but take a look at Montgomery. http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/d..._FY07_MCEA.pdf Not bad with a masters plus which they pay a good portion of. Health care when you retire until. So if you work more then 30 years say to 60 you will have in 35-38 years with a larger pension then a mere 30 years. Take that with your investments (403B) and social security at what ever age and you are set for life. How many out there think this is shabby and are weeping for our fine educators compensation in PG and Montgomery? Maryland State Retirement and Pension System I took the liberty of using the state retirement calculator to illustrate the reality of great long term compensation afforded educators. Now imagine a Montgomery County Teacher. Teaching has its challenges but compensation in Maryland is a dead horse in many places. Imagine if you married a teacher? |
