Default Why So Much Discouragement?

Our family is being relocated to MD because of my husband's job. We have been kind of excited about the move, because we've never lived anywhere other than KY. I love history and culture and the schools are much better than the ones here, but everywhere we turn there's so much negativity about moving to MD from people who live there. People keep telling me that unless you make $200K a year it's not worth it. We're moving either to Frederick or Rockville areas. We make about $95k a year and are looking to rent for a while to make sure we like the area. Is it feasible to live in that area with an income like that? We found large townhouse in a good neighborhood for $1500/m, which seemed like a good price to me. Is there any thing good about relocating to MD?

I hope you checked out the neighborhood before you state its a good one instead of going by the landlords word. There are a lot of neighborhoods in Frederick (if thats where you are moving) that are not "good". Kentucky to Maryland is going to be a major culture shock. And on the salary, its feasible yes, but it depends on what kind of life you live. Im not sure if you have children of daycare age, but daycare is not cheap. You can spend anywhere between 175-295 a week at a center. Individuals may charge less, but again you need to check their backgrounds out entirely. I wish you luck on your move.

Welcome to MD...I went to school there...UK

Anyway with your annual income of $95k it will get you a long way in MD...people have no farking clue, this aint downtown NYC.
MD is growing and has a lot more potential then a lot other places...
Federal, State, County, Local government jobs and also private sectors are everywhere...
I would definately avoid Rockville if I am you. The traffic in Rockville is terrible!
Where will be your husband working? DC? Frederick is alright. It's growing and getting expensive but you can swing it.
Good luck

We have friends in the area and run places that we are thinking of living by them first. We don't live extravagantly. We do have three kids. The reputation of the schools in Maryland is one of the reasons we're so psyched about going. My job here is letting me continue that work in MD, only from home, so childcare is not an issue.

Myselfdotcom, thanks for the encouragement. My husband will be working in Rockville. We just really liked the atmosphere of Frederick and he's used to a one hour commute already, so we decided to live there.

Hello,

I love Maryland. If you want it, we have got it. But here's a couple of things. Traffic is going to be different here because we are in a smaller area with more vehicles. Two yes always check out the neighborhood and find out where all the local places you need are and what there area is like. Key to that is I would do that anywhere's I was planning to move to. Third no you don't have to make 200k to live in Maryland with your household income of 95k you will be fine. Not all of us Marylanders are bitter and grumpy. There's lots of great things to do in Maryland for families. Yes we have crime but so does every state, and every country. I lived here for over thirty years and have never been a victim of any crime. Oh yeah I leave my front door unlocked and my car unlocked and gee nothings ever happened to me or my family. By the way did I tell you I love Maryland.

Not grumpy nor bitter. I can hardly believe you leave your car or house unlocked unless your house is gated w/ security or your in the middle of the woods. Let me ask you this, if u do as you said, what is going to be your excuse if you get robbed? Oh I left my things unlocked. Good luck trying to tell an insurance company that for replacement items. I have lived here over thirty years as well, and I would never leave anything not locked.

Maybe because at the end of the day there just things. I am also involved with my neighborhood, community, local government and the schools my kids goto. I know my neighbors and they know me and my family. We look out for each other. We know we can depend on each other. I won't live in fear and I won't sit back and complain about how horriable life is. I find the good things to focus on and when things aren't so great I look to see how I can change it because I know it has to start with one person to spread. No I don't live in the sticks, gated community or security. Other then what I stated above and the local police department. Insurances Companies are in general are a pain they have one loop whole after another to avoid paying. I'm not worried about them. Then again I'm not worried about being robbed either. I face life this way for every negative there is always at least one positive, so yes I say bitter and grumpy. That's was not to anyone person it's to anyone and everyone that can't add a positive to their negative. There is alot of great wonderful things here in Maryland and it is full of wonderful people. I love Maryland and Howard County. I will continue to not be lock happy. Also quick note about an interesting fact most of us lock our doors out of habit because that was the way we were raised.

Hey ya'll. CJ1013, hope your move goes great. I hope mine will also. I've been a bit worried since reading all of the post. My husband and I are only going to be in College Park for 14 weeks. That's where we are going to live while we work in Baltimore. I've also lived in KY, Ft. Campbell. We are from South Georgia and are excited about all of the culture and history also. I hope someone has something good to say about where we are going to live. I know it's going to be a change. I know crime rate is high, so is Atlanta and Albany GA. Just on a smaller city scale, still crime.
One of the things we love is meeting new folks. Learning about the way people live,etc..
I hope we haven't made a mistake. It's too late now anyway. We've already signed our 14 week contract.

Dianne

All I have to say is good luck. and dh, I'm from Western Howard County and it's nothing impressive anymore. I don't understand why people from Howard County think it's just so wonderful. The part of the county I grew up in was considered in the sticks and now people are just flocking the roadways to be in the "country", but they want to push the old timers out. It isn't fair what growth has done to the farm lands. I grew up when you didn't have to lock your doors or anything so no I wasn't raised that way. I fear some crack head will invade my space and hurt my children before the "local police department" can even get there. And as for neighbors, I've had nothing but issues with the people I have lived around in this state. Full of gossip and negativity. I am turning my negative into a positive by leaving here. I am also involved with my children's schools, but there are issues there as well. You may not have the fear of being robbed, but it happens every day, every hour, ever second.
