I settled for Gaithersburg because pricewise, it was more convenient. I spend a little on my commute but I like that I am in between Baltimore and DC. As well as shooting back up to NJ when I need to (had to last week).
Silver Spring definitely has action though but I prefer peace and quiet when I am home. Eventually I am going to need to get to know MD a little better, but I have time for that. Right now I am just focusing on doing a good job at work while planning my next move. (career-wise and perhaps getting out of the DC area to go further South.)

Burtonsville - ride on Maryland Commuter
You may try Burtonsville in MD. It's very central to Baltimore and DC, plus the Maryland Commuter luxury bus will take you non stop into DC. Commute time depending upon how early you leave could vary between 45 minutes and hour n half.
