And in response to some of the other posters....while Kent Island is nice and has some great restaurants/night life....it is EXTREMELY busy during rush hour due to it's proximity to the Bay Bridge. Easton puts you out there a bit more, so traffic is much lighter.....a word of caution...DO NOT SPEED on the Eastern Shore....they are really tough on speeders....

The county does not have a whole lot of schools. The county itself is only around 35k people I think.
Talbot County Public Schools
Elementary - Chapel and White Marsh are the best, both are very small. Easton Elem. is over crowded and they have just completed some redistricting so if you purchase a new home you will need to check carefully what district the home is in.
Middle - There are only 2, Easton & St. Michaels again it depents on where you live.
There are also a handful of private schools.
Sports, are you talking high school? Both Easton & St. Michaels have programs.

We just moved from the Eastern Shore a few months ago, sadly. Where on the Eastern Shore,or have you not decided that yet?
The above schools are located in Talbot County (Easton,St.Michael's,Tilghman Island areas), we lived in Caroline County which is a little more inland than Talbot, but they have a good school district as well.
If schools are of importance to you and your family, I would reccomend looking at schoolmatters.com, it was of great help to us during our relocation from MD.
I would have to say that Dorchester (Cambridge area)and Wicomico (Salisbury) school districts do not have great reputations, but I haven't lived there or had my children attend school there,so I could not say.
Talbot County is starting to build up quite a bit,but still being able to hold onto that old town,Eastern Shore way of life. It is a beautiful area,I think the entire mid-shore region is beautiful.
Good Luck!

Thanks NYMD67 & MikeinMd for the reply. We've looked up school info. for the Easton schools, it was helpful. We'll be very sure to choose the right place to buy. Any odor problems with any chicken farms around there? I'v been reading about them, yuck! We're love to crab and fish ( just relocated from La. good crabbin there).Any great locations there in the Easton area?

Not too much chicken farm odor around there but there is the more south you go on the shore ... yeah but you get used to it. Much rather smell a farm than inhale an exhaust pipe any day. I am in Crisfield (about 1.5 hours south of Easton) and the fishing and crabbing are AWESOME ... so is the chicken farm smell ... but that is ok. One thing Easton does not have that the lower shore has and that is mosquitos.
As far as getting abck to the original poster and responding to the tax situation that poster is spot ON! Taxes are on their way up and they won't come come down. MD is very unfriendly to retirees ... especially if you have a federal annuity. As of now I plan to retire in Crisfield but I may have to go to South Carolina to escape the taxes.

Thanks cygnus-x1 for the info. Your exhaust pipe comment made me laugh! Oue son did his grad. work in Charleston, S.C. We fell in love with it on our many visits. The crabbing is the best. We left part of our hearts there. I think our son and family will eventually go back there. I'm originally from Md. So thats why we relocated there, but could be swayed to go to S.C. Glad to know about the mosquitos, we experienced them at Assateage last summer.

If you are used to MA taxes, I don't think that you will find the MD taxes onerous. The tax reports that I've seen on overall tax burden puts MD less than MA. I'm not saying it is tax friendly, but it's certainly not the worst.

I moved to Easton area less than a year ago from a moderate size city in New York State. If you are used to having lots to do, Easton is not the place for you. What's open after 9 p.m.? The new, less than one year old, Walgreens and the liquor stores. Easton is too far removed from the metropolitan areas e.g. Baltimore, Washington DC, Philly for my tastes. And more importantly, I was used to jumping on Amtrak to go to Boston, Montreal or New York City. These is NO public transportation to any of the big cities "near" Easton--you will have to drive to them and then deal with the parking hassles.
For those over 55 who want to move to Easton in a frugal way, consider Jensen's Hyde Park. Yes, it is manufactured housing--but it is a very quiet, safe, and pleasant community--with a pool and club house.
