Hey,

I am sure you guys get this question all the time but here it goes. I am considering taking a position at Ft. Meade. Its a government position and it pays 70k/year. Is this enough to live comfortably as a single individual? Also, are their any places you would recommend in particular? I am currently 21 years old and I don’t really mind renting or living in a small place. I would probably only take this job for a couple of years to further my career. Thanks in advance for any input.

Yes, it is enough. That sounds like an excellent salary for a 21 yr old. You should have no problem finding a place to rent nearby, be it Laurel or Columbia or wherever. The Columbia area has a lot of things, besides shopping, there are a ton of restaurants, bars, bowling alleys, laser tag, etc.

You can easily live on 70,000 per year as a single person. I would live closer to DC and reverse commute out to Fort Meade. You'll find a much better young, singles scene. What GS level are you being offered?

I live in the DC area on half your salary.

You'll be fine on $70K.

WOW, good work on the salary. You will be fine. I'm at Meade too. I recommned you strongly consider any north/south commute to Meade that takes you along I95 or 295, depending on your preferences it can be a challanging rush hour. DC singles scene is tops! Baltimore has some good areas. Columbia is nice also. We are selling know but its a SFH in Crofton located in 30 minutes fro everything.

You're doing good if you're 21 years old and pulling in $70,000. As to where to live, Columbia would give you an easy commute via MD-32 or MD-175 (a lot more stop lights on 175 though). Columbia as a whole is pretty nice and would be about a 15 or 20 minute commute to the base as long as traffic isn't bad. In regards to Laurel, it depends on where you live. If you live in the Russett area of Laurel you can take MD-198 to the base or hop on MD-295 and exit at MD-32. Laurel is about a 15 minute drive to the base. Odenton is right off base (5 minute or less commute) but I don't know a lot about it. Hanover might be worth a look as its close to 295. I don't know how the rental situation is there though. They do have a really nice mall though I've heard they've had problems with crime there. In regards to other areas, I don't know them. I would recommend in regards to other areas that you look for something close to either MD-295 or MD-95. The reason I say that is because you can then take MD-32 right to the base (or MD-175 if you don't mind hitting 3 stop-lights). I can't help you regards to the singles scene.
