Default Working in Millersville

Hello, I am considering relocating from the west to Maryland. I would be working in Millersville. The job could provide very good experience and decent pay ($58k) and good benefits, but I am having some troubles finding affordable housing online in the area- that is not given bad reviews (on apartmentratings.com) or crime prone (according to posts on this site).

The only relatively affordable area I see is Glen Burnie, but I hear mixed views on the safety of this area. Seemingly safer and nicer areas such as Crofton, Odenton, Arnold, Pasadena, and Millersville seem to be very expensive.

I would like to keep my monthly rent under $1000 (for a 1 bdr. apt.), otherwise the higher salary there means a lot less. Is this possible to find in a good area around Millersville? Where are the best areas in terms of a compromise for safety and expense? Specific neighborhoods or apartment complexes would really help. Is is worth it to spend over $1000 for peace of mind? I have never been to Maryland, DC, etc. and am wondering how much stock I should put into opinions of safety in the area that I see on this site. Thank you very much for any help.
