Moving Out Of Maryland
My family and I are moving within two years back to the Jersey shore. Jobs essentially are nonexistant here unless you are willing to work for minimum wage. And yes, there is tension here with life long locals, newcomers, racial, etc. We see it in the workplace, my kids see it at school. We still can't get use to this. We moved from above the Mason Dixon line were we don't have this crap. Just unbelievable( It truly is a melting pot Jersey,Phili,New York.)
You have to travel at least an hr.to make what you are worth, honestly. It was o.k. to commute an hour or so 4 yrs. ago,the commute was worth it in regards to the way of life on the Eastern Shore. Gas prices and cost of living as everyone is aware have pushed many living here to rent or sell their homes and move closer to decent jobs. We are seeing more rentals in my neighborhood and an increase of police activity. I understand why people rent, we may be doing the same when we move if we can't afford to buy. But sellers are desperate to get out and if they can't sell, rather than forclosure they are renting to anyone who can afford what they are asking. This is causing values to just dive. No were is perfect to live, believe me.We have to be realistic and have to go were the jobs are and near family again.

Here's a twist...We've relocated several times due to work since 1990; NJ Shore to Fred'burg VA to Carroll County MD to Charlotte area of NC.
I still take the family back to Carroll County, MD to visit friends and I get more and more homesick everytime I go up there. The Carroll / Frederick / Washington County area is simply beautiful and I find that I really miss living there. I have no need for the other parts of the state.
Maybe one day when the wife and I are empty-nesters (and we can afford it?), we can move back up there.

Just wondering where you live, as we also live on the Eastern Shore and are relocating for various reasons. We moved here because we love the Eastern Shore environment, being close to the water is so nice, however, it has many, many drawbacks and not being from here, is the BIGGEST one by far!
If you are not from this area, it is extremely difficult to make new friends. Any friends that we have, are people who are not from this area.
We also have 2 children who are internationally adopted and the questions that come out of people's mouths around here are mindblowing to be quite honest.
We are relocating because of my husband's job, however, I do believe that if it were not for this offer from his company to relocate,we would have been looking on our own in a few months anyway's.
We do not live close to many conveniences and although we knew this when purchasing here, it is much more difficult than we anticipated, especially with children.
The Eastern Shore of MD is a beautiful place to be, but we will only come to visit once we move. We would never consider living here again because the negatives outweigh the positives. Possibly if we could afford a home closer to the water when we retire, we may consider it, but to raise a family here is not realistic....
For Us.

We are in Northern Queen Anne's county. We may list our house next month, I hope we can sell quickly. It will be hard for our children to swith schools all though if we stay there is no gaurantee the values will not fall more than they already have and then we will be here a-lot longer than we planned. I am in the housing business and the market here is not going to get better anytime soon, especially for working families trying to purchase. It is getting very difficult. I am hoping the new Housing Bill set to become law 10/01 will open the door for more buyers. Ihope that when you decide to move, the market will be more promising.

I left Mont Co, MD in March after 9 years. My husband was born and raised there and he said it was time to get out. He is also a county employee! We just couldn't see ourselves continuing to raise our kids in a place where the goverment only cared about the down-county rich people, catered to all the illegals who overtaken everything, schools that just keep going downhill, and crime that keeps going up...we moved to a smaller town in PA and for $100,000 less than we sold our townhouse for, we now have a 4 year old single family home, 4 bedrooms, 3 and a half baths, 2 car garage on almost a half acre in a nice quiet family neighborhood. I also can now afford to stay home with the kids! Tell me how we haven't impoved our lives!! This is much better by far and we love it here.

Originally I left Maryland for a change of scenery/lifestyle but guess what? I am moving back because I missed it! I notice a few people mentioning the cost of living but when I relocated I noticed that the pay scales didn't always match the actual cost of living....I have always found that to be interesting. Would anyone disagree that salaries are fair in comparison to the cost of living in Maryland as opposed to many other states? I hope that made any sense....

Hey, that's why I left years ago. Isn't it sad to see what has happened to a wonderful place like MCO. Thanks to the liberal wackos, the schools are in decline coupled with the increasing crime rate. However, if you say anything, you are labled a racist. I always knew the lefties would destroy that county. I am just glad that I have wonderful memories before the place went downhill. Incidentally, my sister is in Rockville, but she is preparing to leave soon herself now that the kids are grown. She was smart. Her kids went to private school k-12!

Hey, just an update, moved back to the Jersey Shore.............A little sooner than later, though. My husband landed a great job(believe it or not in this economy). We had to move right before Christmas, what a crazy time! We are still working on selling our home in Maryland, maybe a Short Sale next month(We are praying for it!) The schools are much more progressive here, kids are doing great! We are leasing and are in no rush to buy for a while. The economy is bad everywhere, although there is more opportunity for jobs here. Prospects were non-existant on the Eastern Shore,Annapolis etc. Again, no where is perfect but this was a good move for my family. Good luck & God Bless to everyone out there trying to navigate through this mess, things will get better!

I moved out of Md. in 1996. I moved because I was so tired of living paycheck to paycheck. Their housing is SO OVERPRICED. The only thing I miss about Md. is my family and familiarity. Everytime I go back there is something different so it really doesn't feel so familiar anymore. I don't like snow and cold weather so that's another negative for me. I was born and raised there but would not want to live there again. And yes, there are tons of snobs in Montgomery Co. and in Columbia, Md.
