Default Maryland Here I come

Hi all,

I'm moving to Maryland in a small town over an hour south of DC by the Chesapeake bay. Just wondering what I can expect. I'm from Indiana and am in Pennsylvania right now.

I heard the cost of living is pretty hight there. was that just a big city comparison or can I expect something nicer in the rural areas?

I'm moving there this weekend the 2nd of feb(temp housing has been set up by employer till I can find something). Will I be able to watch the super bowl at a pub or will they all be closed or something cause its Sunday? The liquor laws are a bit ridiculousness in Pennsylvania, how are they in Maryland.

I've been trying to look this info up but I've just been getting bits and pieces, nothing that really answers my questions.

You will be able to watch the superbowl in almost any bar or restaurant there is!!! Welcome to MD!
The cost of living is high, but it also varies by county and city. Where are you moving to?

My new job is in Solomons, but I've only been able to find affordable places in California and Lexington Park. (Ive been searching on Roommates.com, can't find much for housing anywhere else at a price I'm willing to pay)

The solomons area is great, I highly recommend the tiki bar! if you're looking for a place to rent, it can't hurt to see what's listed through the MLS. get in contact with a realtor in the area and ask them to pull up rental listings that are available in the area. Good luck with the move!

California is very nice, you should definitely buy there! We have driven through there and a lot of people say how nice it is there. You will definitely be able to find a pub or bar that is open, Maryland is definitely not what you are picturing LOL

Jenni: Check out Deale, which is just north of Solomons.

Liquor laws are easier in Maryland than PA, Ma and Pa bottle stores everywhere, fireworks too, but still not in the grocery stores like Virginia. No smoking in bars. Pubs are very definitely open on Sunday. An hour south of DC, guess that would be around St. Mary's Summer traffic much different than winter. Lifestyle all very easy going. Laid back. Leave your socks up north. Only issue I see is that for culture/concerts/Thai food etc. you will have to fight DC - 95 corridor traffic to get anywhere. Love the Bay. Crabbing, fishing, sailing, if you water ski bring wet suit or pant bottoms you will be far enough south to get stinging nettles.

Deale is definitely not just north of Solomons, and there is no reason for the OP to even look there. Housing prices are very high anywhere in MD. However, living here in SOMD is significantly cheaper than living close to the city. I live in Great Mills and work in Lexington Park (2 minute commute woot...). You should be very happy in this area. There is very little crime, and there are plenty of bars to visit even on Sundays. We even have drive-thru liquor stores... Its a bit necky out this way...
