Commute: Mt. Airy to DC and B'more?
Found a GREAT home for sale in Mt. Airy, just over the Frederick County Line. It's priced at 60% of market value (even considering current market values being lower than last year), only needs cosmetics and is twice the size of other homes in our price range...and single family! We love that area but it seems too far.
Problem is, I work in Pikesville, and my wife works in downtown Washington - my commute would be rough, hers hellish, right? Or is there some sneaky back way from Mt. Airy to DC she could take?

Mt Airy to Bmore isn't THAT bad, maybe 45-50 min with traffic, depending where you're going. DC commute from Mt Airy is hellish any which way. People drive it but I could never handle the headache. Her best option would be to drive to Shady Grove and ride the metro or to Frederick and ride the Marc.

I have a co-worker who lives in Mt. Airy... and he really doesn't mind the commute (the office is near BWI - so not quite inside the B'more beltway).
From Mt. Airy to DC..... good luck. You'd have to pretty much hit 270 at some point (via 80, 27 or 117)... Which is still a ways from Shady Grove... which I agree with Debi18, is probably your best bet (taking the metro).

Not sure how the traffic is on Route 32 in the morning, but you can avoid 270 and take 70 to 32 and possibly Route 29 from there into DC.

Either way it's about 60 miles by road...probably more than she could do. It's too bad I'm not yet making enough money to be a sole breadwinner...
