Hi all,

I'm moving to the area from Chicagoland (NW suburbs) for a job on the eastern shore. I'm a 26 year old who has mostly lived in college towns the last few years. Would you recommend living on the western shore and commuting (more nightlife/activities/young adults etc.), or staying somewhere like Stevensville (near the bridge, making it easily accessible). Looking to rent, not buy, and have cat. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

If you live on the Western Shore and commute over to the Eastern you will soon hate life.

It would help if you'd be a bit more specific as to where your job will be. The Shore is deceptively large and driving can be problematic in some areas for much of the Summer.

I accepted a job in Ridgely. I'm thinking of nightlife/things to do on the weekend and meeting people my age...living in Ridgely seems like a bad idea. Maybe Kent Island?

Look at distances and figure how much driving will be involved every day if you do this. Especially in the summer when 404 is a major route to and from the beach.

I'd suggest Grasonville rather than Kent Island, as you could easily get to Annapolis for weekends. Don't make your commute excessively long. Ridgely is a cute small town, but I am not sure there are any rentals there.

Have you thought about Dover or Milford, DE?

Stevensville is nice but I don't think it's cheap.

I wonder where the OP wound up moving to. My vote would have been for Easton or Chestertown. Easton continues to boom slowly - there's more to do and see than 7 years ago when I first moved to the area, but it has retained a good small town vibe.

Ridgely, however, which is where I moved to and just moved FROM - well, there's not much going on. You can find decent rentals at reasonable rates, there's a lot of residents who care and believe in community...but man oh man, that town just can't get back on its feet. "Downtown" is one block long, on one side of the street. If you want to get your hair did, buy some booze, or pray, Ridgely has enough barbershops, liquor stores and churches to get 'er done. Anything else and it's a minimum 30 minute drive. You'll get to know the back roads pretty well in summer to get around the beach traffic. The smell of agriculture will knock you sideways. Oh, and good luck getting internet if you don't live in town. I will miss the views, the people, the awesome night sky gazing with no light pollution, but after a while the never-ending hassle of managing without this or that, or putting up with the other, just really wore me down. By the time I'd become fed up with the lack of jobs and made the decision to work in Baltimore, I was eager to get out.
