Job op. in rockville - where to live? (Baltimore, Bethesda: renter, houses)

Hi, I'll search the forum as well but I just learned of a great job opportunity in Rockville and I have a bunch of questions....

I know the cost of living is high up there (I'm in NC now, orig. from NJ, used to live in FL). I'll be a renter (a 40 year old renter, ugh) for a while - I hate the suburbs, am single, prefer something artsy and more urban, old houses, parks, etc. Would love to live near water but that ups the cost of living, I know. Right now I'm paying less than $750 per month for rent and I sense that'll be virtually impossible there.

Where would you suggest I look?

1. Expect to pay roughly double what you're currently paying in rent for a 1 bedroom apt. in Rockville.

2. If you don't want to live in the suburbs and want something more urban with older houses, it sounds like you're talking about DC or Baltimore. In the case of DC, that'd make you a reverse commuter and you'll have to expect to pay even more in rent. Not so sure about rental rates in Baltimore.

I'd suggest a visit to Rockville. You might like it. Also check out downtown Bethesda.

Hi, I lived in a apt complex called Fireside Village (something like that) in downtown Rockville, near the mainstreet area. It was a nice area, a bit of an old-town feel and set a little away from all the congestion of the area. But, its still Rockville and has all that goes with it-- very expensive and very congested. Pretty parks were close, tons of restaurants and shopping right down the street on the Pike, and you are practically right over the Beltway, so its convenient. You could check that place out....
