Anecdote:

I've been visiting Crofton for upwards of 15 years now, my wife's grandparents live there. I would have said I had a really good handle on that area's identity until this weekend. My wife's aunt took us for a drive to Crownsville. It only took about 5 minutes or so to get off the beaten path and it looked like we were in another world.......swamps, big trees, water birds, small older houses, an abandoned institutional complex of some sort and a few farms.

I don't know if that is "Southern Maryland" to the locals or not, but to my eye I had clearly left the transplant zone and was somewhere else. My frame of reference would be the Middle Peninsula of VA. The point of the story is that even places you have been through and visited for years can surprise you.

My second question is, is what I saw a relic of Southern Maryland? It sure looked like it, but I've only to Charles/Calvert/St. Mary's once in my life, and it was dark for most of the drive.

This is why my parents do not want me on city data often.

You guys need to calm down down. I understand that debating is fine, but it is as if you guys are getting into feelings.

You guys have to realize that Maryland will never have a solid label. There are too many opinions and biased people for it to get a solid label.

However, I do believe it is ok to share opinions. I am just saying to not get into emotions because of someone else's opinion.

In my opinion, I think Maryland is in the middle in lots of ways, and have reasoning to back me up. I do not deny either culture sides, and do not believe MD is 0% northern or southern. It is a mix, we have to realize that. Who ever said there is strictly north and south?

Simply visiting a place isn't the same as having extensive experience with it, and even then you may not have the handle you think you do on the local culture. These things are a lot more dynamic and complex than a map or two would portray.

As someone who lived many, many years in Florida... be careful what you wish for.

I've had experience in Maryland and I really don't care for you dismissing it. Either quit putting me down or go away.

I don't know anything about a she biddy but I know enough about Maryland's culture and it's people and knowledge of linguistics maps to draw a conclusion about the majority of the state. I know you think it's Southern and the part you're from may be the beginning of the South in Maryland but the majority of the state is not Southern.

It's not Southern. It's not Northeastern either.

I disagree. It's more Northeastern than it is Southern.
