I used to live in Charlotte. It is nicer but boring (to me). Here in MD there are so many more interesting cities nearby that are just a 4-6 hr drive. Then you have beaches, DC attractions, plays, cultural events galore. NYC 4hrs away!. Anyway, the downside IS the cost to live here. You could always ask for a higher salary than what is posted. I have found most employers are understanding in that regard (heck they do the same thing). You are NOT going to get the same nice apt here that you will get in Charlotte. My Charlotte apt was very nice and it was newer.

The range of opportunities is much better in MD. Charlotte is big on banking and the current layoffs is going to affect other sectors. Just because you work in Baltimore does not mean you have to live in Baltimore. There is Baltimore county, Columbia Md is nice and between DC/Baltimore.

And when I ask a question, I want an answer, rather than having to infer an answer from the fact you're now ducking me (my daughter's doctors have done this to me. "Can you give her these allergy shots?" "No, we don't know how." Simple, right? It took 6 months of this guy ducking me before I could bully the answer out of him.) From what I can tell, these are typical Southernisms, and they really rub me the wrong way.

As for Charlotte itself, I can really only speak about South Charlotte. Other parts of Charlotte have their own problems, as someone else mentioned. On the whole, the parts of Charlotte that aren't depressed and crime ridden are plastic and soulless. And not in the "people work too hard and are stressed out" kind of "soulless" that people complain about on the Maryland board. I mean Attack of the Pod-People kind of soulless.
I remember a northern nj (I think northern nj) transplant to Harford Co that
was complaining about the non-staightforwardness in MD

Yeah cost of living is gonna suck. Crime in B'more sucks, it is getting ridiculous with the energy bills. If you move here have some money saved up is all I can say. If you want to work int he city and be safe you probably won't want to live in the city. So a long painful commute will be a choice.

There are some relatively safe places in the city such as Mt. Vernon, Bolton Hill, etc. But you do have to have quite a bit of money to live in the better places.

Default from Carolina to Maryland

You should definetly move to Maryland. It is the richest state in the nation when it comes down to the average person. Besides many people from the deep south come here anyway. You would not be the first. And you don't lose that southern hospitality.

Show me where there is southern hospitality in this state. And I have yet to meet anyone from the deep deep south that has moved to Maryland. Why would you leave a cheaper state where you can actually afford things and move to a tax fun filled over priced snotty state???

my parents are from North Carolina and aren't planning to move back anytime soon. BTW North Carolina isn't even considered the deep south in the first place

It is the south correct?? I would move to NC in a heartbeat. I am stuck here for a little while longer and thats it than you all can have this state that should be knocked off the map.
