This question boggles people.
TECHNICALLY, Maryland is in the South. We are a "Mid-Atlantic" state though.

The distinctions between north and south continue to blur as corporate america creates new enclaves from relocations. 17,000 new jobs are coming to Harford County Maryland (sleepy and boom boom from Aberdeen proving grounds) Becoming a southerner doesn't happen overnight. The newcomers will adjust to restaurants closing earlier because of all the fishermen who get up at 5a.m. - a slower pace from New York because the heat takes its toll regardless of personal objectives. These adjustments to your local surroundings exist all over the U.S. - In Pennsylvania both yankees and southerners can't get a house built on time in the late fall because of hunting season where even the schools close for opening day of deer season. In Maine it's potatoes, other states have hay to harvest and on Cape Cod the operator of the B&B where we were staying left a note tucked in the door - the blues are running see you in two days call the police if you need anything. While our accents continue to blend, and customs too, mother nature and the rythm of the seasons fundamentally dictate. Good, friendly people can be found just about everywhere. Being one helps find other like minded individuals.

It depends on who you ask. I lived in the Annapolis area for a few years & was once asked by a Marylander if I considered Maryland to be the South (I am from the Northeast). Of course I said "yes". Ask a New Englander & they will tell you Maryland is a Southern state, but ask a Marylander & they will say North most likely. I agree with the Mason Dixon comment. After living there for a few years & then moving to New York, I can definetely say I consider it to be the South.

I was born in MD. Spent my military years in TN, GA, AL, VA, and FL.
Maryland isn't the South.
No one in the south consciders MD a southern state, and MOST (not all) in the north generally aren't offended by labeling it as northern. So I'd have to go with Not the south.

Florida doesn't count as "South" anymore. It's its own thing. And that thing ain't what they got in Mississippi.
