Maryland My Maryland is southern
More southern than northern. No, Maryland is not Georgia, but Maryland was a slave state, a tobacco state, and South of the Mason Dixon line. Maryland put more soldiers in the Confederate Army than Florida did. So MD is southern. Read Maryland My Maryland about spurning the northern scum. It's in the lyrics.

What bothers me is that years ago, northerners visiting would claim its the South. But now we have people from New Jersey coming here and saying its not so much different from up there. This is what depresses me.
I went to an interview and info session at the Univ of Maryland Dental School in Baltimore yesterday and the curriculum is more geared toward regional licensing requirements and professionally we are in the "Northeast" region. This really bugged mad and a LOT of other people because it would be hard to practice even in Virginia and the DC area straddles the border! Other Northeast states, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, etc are all places with zero economic prospects, stagnant or declining populations and economy, unbearable weather, and miserable people.
I don't know why so many people here, especially people with roots in the tri-state area, want to make us northern? Remember we straddle both sides. We can CHOOSE! Especially in this day and age, we should be looking south, not north. The south is where the future is. Sunbelt vs. Rust Belt. Very simple, look at how most cities in the South are booming while most areas in the Northeast are in various rates of decline. SOme areas like Pittsburgh, Buffalo, DETROIT, NEWARK, etc are just in free fall. New Jersey has a serious brain drain to southern and Southwestern states every year.

Every elementary school kid should be taught the words to Maryland My Maryland, especially the part about spurning the Northern scum, like the ones moving here from Pennsylvania and New Jersey. It would be wise for us to heed the advice of our forefathers who penned this great song.
Come summer, next time I've next to a car with Jersey or NY or PA plates I'm going to roll down my windows and blast my country music at full volume, and drive extra slow to make sure they see the Support Our Troops sticker on the back of my car. This is how we do things here, if ya'll don't like it, 95 goes both ways!!!! The illegals too...Dulles has daily flights to Mexico City.

Maryland is definitely not a southern state. The lifestyle is fast-paced, people are generally rude and politics are infamously liberal. All traits of a northern state. I've been to the south many times and southern folk definitely consider Maryland to be a yankee/northern state. Another easy way to tell is that iced tea here is not sweetened - in Virginia and south it is.

Florida is not considered a southern state. Florida didn't even join the US until 1845 - 27th state, Maryland was 7th. True Maryland is south of the Mason-Dixon line but the lifestyle and attitudes don't change at that magical border. Southern Maryland (Charles, Calvert and St. Mary's counties) definitely has a southern feel to it but there are 23 counties and it's definitely in the minority - coincidentally this is where all of tobacco farming took place. Baltimore was used as a Union headquarters during the Civil War.

Haha. Not a fan of the confederate flag flying in the background on the Toby Keith video, but if thats your style, then do your thing.

And while the two of you are at your civil war re-enactment via crap music vs crappier music, I'll roll down the window of my Prius and blast Some Nirvana 20X louder than your Toby Keith and Big Pun. You'll recognize me by the "Support Our Troops by Sending Them Home" sticker in the back of my car right beside the California/Oregon/Washington/Colorado/Minnesota licenses plate.
But in any case, to the original question:
South in a political sense: No
South in a personality sense: No
South in a lifestyle sense: Mostly No
South in a social perspective sense: Yes

About the political and personality, are we talking about native Marylanders or about transplants?
Most native here are conservative and Republican. The problem is that vote-rich areas like the DC and Baltimore areas are ovverrun with newcomers who are ruling our politics. Believe me, most ordinary people here do not want to welcome illegal immigrants with open arms, allow abortion clinics on every corner or see gay people struttin their stuff in front of our kids (or future kids).
