Another easy way to tell is that iced tea here is not sweetened - in Virginia and south it is.

I luv the sweet tea..and not the kind out of the soda machine that they say is sweet tea...lol

Lets put it this way...I luv the south and here in Maryland I don't find that charm. And I am moving to Garrett County where the flags still are hung in the back window of pick up trucks

South of Mason-Dixon line, but like Kentucky it did not technically secede during the civil war, though some say that was only due to the capitol being moved all around the state. I like to consider western MAryland as being at the northern end of the Shenandoah Valley which is what makes Washington County more like counties in Virginia than Pennsylvania, in language and customs. In today's world you can live with whatever style you prefer. The Mid-Atlantic answer is probably the most accurate, but the state capture elements of North and South, and East,, and maybe a little bit of WEst

Citizens of Baltimore fired on union troops moving South when they stopped in Baltimore at the railroad depot near Camden Yards. I dont think too many Yankees would shoot their own. Maryland is Southern.

Might as well vote -
Eastern Shore/Western MD = Southern-ish but anyone from the South would laugh at that assessment
DC/Balt/Central MD = Northeastern attitude for sure, particularly regarding valuing ambition/job prestige over looks
BTW - that's one of the things I like about it here! Different types of places all in one state. You want to hang out on a farm? Dance at a urban nightclub? Get Ethiopian food? Ribs? Hang with sailors? Listen to punk, country, hip-hop, opera, jazz? You can do all of that in one state...

Sorry, I'm traumatized by living in South Florida. In FL, they care very much what you look like - your hair, your weight, your clothes. In DC/MD, for better or worse, they care more what you do for a living.
That's been my impression!

Yeah, I can see that about the DC area, and especially in contrast to South Florida.
I think it's hard to make a case that New Yorkers, at least in Manhattan, don't care about their looks. They may look ridiculous, but they sure work at it.
Again, though, not as much as in South Florida. I don't know anywhere that's any more looks-conscious than that place, outside of Europe.

You hit the nail on the head, that is a Manhattan thing, but many of them are transplants trying to keep up with the Joneses and GQ magazine to fit in. The hipster counter culture kids look like they dont care but actually spend copious amounts of time trying to achieve the disheveled look. Outside of work attire, many of us non-Manhattanites just throw on jeans and a sweatshirt most of the time.
DC is career oriented and careers are what brings people together down there, so that seems to be the big comparison. Is Joe a consultant? Senator? Lawyer? etc
South Florida is the land of skin and centers around the beach/pool type activity. Naturally physical appearance is going to be key down there.
